Mrs. Beam was a home-
maker and lifelong member
of First Baptist Church of
Kings Mountain. She served
as the crossing guard at East
Elementary School. for 13.
years and was a member of
“the Carolina Travel Club for
over 30 years. A loving wife,
mother, grandmother and
great-grandmother, ~~ who
lived a simple life. she put
her emphasis on serving her
Lord and Savior and loving
her family and friends, rather
than earthly possessions.
The family would like to ex-

CAMDEN, SC — Rosa
Jones O’Kelley Smoak , 97,
passed away on June 29,
2013.
She was born on June 6,
1916 in Kershaw, SC, the
daughter of George N. and
Gladys Cook Jones and edu-
cated in the public schools of
Bishopville, SC.
Mrs. Smoak was first
married to George Hamlin
O’Kelley Sr. who died in
1955. They had two chil-
dren, George H. O’Kelley Jr.
of Beaufort, SC and Mary
‘Wade O’Kelley Smith of
Kings Mountain, NC.
She was married to the
late William Walker Smoak.
They owned the Smoak-
house in Camden, SC.
Mrs. Smoak is survived
by her son, George and his
wife, Yancey and her daugh-
ter, Mary Wade Smith, six
grandchildren Robert L.
Smith III, Boiling Springs,
McLendon Wade Winstead
and husband Michael, and
O’Kelley Smith Broadway,
all of Kings Mountain;
George Hamlin O’Kelley III

JUNE 27: Officer H.W. Car-
penter said that Christopher
Williams, Ward, N.C., was driv-
ing his Peterbuilt 1995 on I-85
and an unknown object came
loose from the trailer and struck a
2006 Toyota operated by William
Krause Jr., Spotswood, NJ, also
traveling on I-85 South at Mile
Marker 8. Property damage was
estimated at $1500 to the Toyota.

of a controlled substance
Cleveland County Sher-
iff’s Office Vice/Narcotics
Unit, working jointly with
the United States Drug En-
forcement Administration
(DEA), Greenville, SC Field
Office, executed a search
warrant at the Smoker’s
Edge business located at
3778 W. Dixon Boulevard,
in Shelby June 26.
The targets of the investi-
gation were Steven and
Sirena Petty of Gaffney, SC
and Jessica Weast of Ellen-
boro, according to Sheriff
Alan Norman.
The DEA arrested Steven
and Sirena Petty at their res-
idence, 611 Grassy Pond
Road, Gaffney, SC, and Jes-
sica Weast at another loca-
tion.
All three suspects are
charged with distribution of
a controlled substance Ana-
log and will be processed at
a federal facility in
Greenville, SC, Norman
said.
Help sought in identifiying
suspect vehicles

and Shelby, was shot and
killed between the hours of 6
and 7 p.m. June 20, 2013.
The Cleveland County
Sheriff’s Office is asking for
the public’s help in identify-
ing two vehicles seen in the
area during the time of the
crime.
The first vehicle is a sil-
ver Honda Civic with four
doors, a spoiler and alloy
wheels. The second vehicle
is a black Ford Thunderbird
with dark tinted windows
and a faded paint job.
Anyone with information
regarding either of the vehi-
cles or who may have been
traveling Highway 74
through Cleveland County
on June 20, 2013 between
the hours of 6 and 7 p.m. are
asked to call the Cleveland
County Sheriff’s Office at

Carjacking suspects sought
A Stanley man offering
help to a stranded couple
was victim of a carjacking
June 30, according to Kings
Mountain police.
Steven Ray Hartsell, 45,
138 Hawley St., Stanley, told
KMPD officer B.L. Wilkin-
son that he stopped on East
King Street at S. Oriental
Avenue to assist a male and
female asking for help. He
told police that the subjects
pulled a knife on him and
drove away in his black
2004 Honda Civic.
Police are continuing in-
vestigation into the incident.
Grover man arrested in ‘buy bust’
The Cleveland County
Sheriff’s Office Vice / Nar-
cotics Unit conducted a “buy
bust” operation Monday in
the parking lot of a closed
business on North Post Road
in Shelby.
The target of the opera-
tion was Brandon Oneil
Kirkland of Grover, NC.
Sheriff Alan Norman said
that Kirkland sold crack co-
caine to an informant of the
Sheriff’s Office deputies
moved in to make the arrest.
Kirkland along with Vir-
gil Manuel Baccus fled the
scene in a Pontiac Grand Am
traveling south on North
Post Road. Deputies gave
chase and pursued the vehi-
cle on North Post Road. As
the vehicle went through the
intersection at Cherryville
Road the passenger, Brandon
Kirkland, threw a black ob-
ject out of the window of the
car. Several deputies contin-
ued to chase the fleeing
felons while other deputies
stopped and collected the
black object, which turned
out to be a loaded 9mm
semiautomatic ~~ handgun,
Norman said. Approxi-
mately one half mile later
Baccus and Kirkland
stopped their car and the two
were arrested.

was charged with possession
of a firearm by a convicted
felon, a felony; aiding and
abetting sale of cocaine, one
count; no driver’s license,
careless and reckless driving
and failure to stop for a blue
light and siren. His secured
bond is $25,000.
