JULY 4th: sparkles despite wet weather From page 1A For some, the annual event is simply a good chance to gorge on deep-fried snacks, roasted turkey legs or barbeque. There was also a face-painting booth and lots of sweet treats for sale. As people filtered into the grassy area inside the walking track, a concert by the rock and country Chris Marks Band kicked off the evening. Following a quick, drenching rain toward the end of the band’s performance, the open- ing ceremonies got under way, be- ginning with a Parade of Patriots, featuring Mayor Rick Murphrey in Revolutionary garb, members of the Kings Mountain Police Depart- ment Explorer Post and others. Murphrey, in his welcome com- ments, spoke about patriotism — its important two hundred years ago and today. Erica Carpenter pro- vided an invocation, Sophia Kell- strom sang the national anthem and the Loch Norman Pipe Band per- formed a patriotic medley. And then it was on to the battle reenactment and the fireshow demonstration, which sponsors say is the largest of its kind between Charlotte and Asheville. As Candice Cristo picnicked on the lawn, she soaked up summer rays with her two children, her brother and members of her ex- * tended family. “We come every year,” the Kings Mountain woman said, as her children ran and wrestled in a blur of almost nonstop motion. “We bring snacks and just let the kids play. They love it.” The downpour may have thinned the crowd some, but most were happy to wait out the wet weather. “We hid in our car a little during that, but we knew we would stay,” said Dawn Dellinger, who came with her husband Tyler and seven- month old daughter Olivia.
