Post 243 has ‘adopted’ highways for 25 years
Bessemer City American
Legion Post 243 has partici-
pated in North Carolina’s
Adopt-A-Highway Program
for 25 years.
The Governor’s plaque
and safety vests with the 25-
year emblem and two 25-
year stars for the town’s
AAH signs were presented
to the Post Thursday night.
Elizabeth Stewart, Past
National President of the
American Legion Auxiliary,
made the presentation prior
to installing new officers of
Unit 243.
Twenty-five years ago a
handful of volunteers, many
of whom have passed away,
picked up 12 pickup loads of
trash from the roadway be-
ginning at the site of the
Lithium Corporation plant
through 13th Street and
spent about five hours vol-
unteering on a regular basis.
Today four men remain of
that original group and have
continued the program every
quarter, beginning at the
front of the American Le-
gion, 152 Long Creek Road,
through Long Branch
Church Road picking up
loads of trash and taking it to
the landfill.
The four veteran mem-
bers of the 25-year group are
Alfred Carpenter, Charlie
Gehring, Thomas Steedly
and Scott Wilson. Com-
mander Mike Grigg ac-
cepted the plaque, taking the
occasion to recognize the
Legionnaires for their hard
work in the beautification
project to preserve the
beauty and cleanliness of
North Carolina roadsides.
Nearly 5,000 AAH
groups have adopted approx-
imately 10,000 miles of
state-maintained roads. Last
_ year more than 100,000 vol-
unteers from all 100 counties
picked up more than three
million pounds of litter.
AAH volunteers save the
taxpayers more than $5 mil-
lion annually in roadside
cleanup costs, according to
the N. C. Department o
Transportation. -
