Even though | can’t see you, I'm willing to bet that if you are reading this article your hand. is raised. Suffering is a fact of life that is inescapable. Every- one that will ever live will in some way suffer. This begs the question, “Why do we suffer?” Why does God allow us to en- dure sometimes extreme suffer- ing? The question of evil and suf- fering is one of the most debated topics in our world today. Many people refuse to believe in a God that allows suffering. They say, “Why would God allow such atrocities? Why wouldn't he just stamp them out?” The Christian teaching though is that through the death, burial, resur- rection, and ascension of Christ, God has dealt with suffering. All the sins of the world were poured out on Christ. Those that place their faith in Him will be spared any eternal suffering. That is the good news of the Gospel. The suffering question, how- ever, is fundamentally flawed because it assumes that all suf- fering is bad. Have you ever thought that some suffering may actually be good? Have you ever thought that some suffering may be beneficial? If this is not the case then why do people get in- volved with workout plans like Fellowship & Faith Chords KINGS MOUNTAIN Long Creek Presbyterian Church 701 Long Creek Road 704-629-4406 Love Valley Baptist Church 2032 Bethlehem Road 704-730-0075 Macedonia Baptist Church 1101 S. Why do people run long-distance races? Why do people endure these types of self-inflicted suf- fering? One of the reasons is that there is a sense of accomplish- ment in enduring and conquer- ing suffering. Another reason is that suffering molds a person. Suffering gives one character. And in the case of the Christian, suffering for Jesus ultimately molds him or her into the image of Christ. The church of Smyrna in Rev- elation 2:8-11 is known as the suffering church. Here was a group of believers that were suf- fering for no other reason than for simply being Christians. Jesus says, “I know your tribulation and your poverty.” Jesus was well aware of their suffering. He wanted them to know that their status did not escape his provi- dential care. But, it gets worse! Cansler Street 704-739-4716 The Favor Center Church 602 Slater Street He said, “Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation.” In other words, their suffering was going to get worse. In fact, some would even be imprisoned for their faith. But then Jesus spoke encouragement to them. He said, “Be faithful unto death, and | will give you the crown of life.” Surprisingly, Jesus didn’t say, “It'll all be okay,” or “You'll get through it.” He simply said, “l am enough.” What about you as you read this today? Is there something you are going through that just seems impossi- ble? Know that Jesus is enough for you. The only way to make it through your suffering is to draw close to Him. When you do this He will draw close to you. And you will ultimately know that Jesus is indeed enough.
