KM 11-12 Mision win District 3 title,
advance to state tournament Saturday
Kings Mountain’s 11-12
year-old Dixie Youth all- .
stars advanced to this week's
state tournament by sweep-
ing the District 3 Majors
Tournament last week at the
Kings Mountain YMCA.
Kings Mountain won the
championship with a 6-2 win
over West Lincoln. Its first
game in the state is 11 a.m.
Saturday in Lumberton
against West Rowan.
West Lincoln jumped out
to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of
the first inning with the only
two hits KM would allow. It
was the first time KM had
been behind in the tourna-
ment.
Frank Stump kept his
composure and pitched two
more scoreless innings to
keep the game at 2-0 after
three innings.
Joe Ruffalo led off the
KM fourth with a double and
scored on an RBI single by
Stump to cut the margin to 2-
1A
‘Seth Kennedy started the
fifth inning with a single and
later tied the score at 2-all on
a deep fly ball off the bat of
David Bell. Kennedy fol-
lowed that hit with the game
winner, a two-run double in
the sixth that scored John
Harmon Melton and Stump.
Silas Price scored on a
passed ball and Kennedy
scored on a ground ball by
Bagwell to round out the
scoring.
Bell pitched the last three
innings, allowing only one
base runner and picking up
the win. Stump and Seth
Kennedy had two hits while
Ruffalo, Melton and DJ Bag-
well added one hit each.
Earlier Wednesday, KM
eliminated Bessemer City
13-1.
Xavier Swann was im-
pressive on the mound, mix-
ing in an impressive
curveball to complement a
good fast ball. He gave up
only three hits and allowed
three unearned runs.
Hunter Helms was just as
impressive on the mound for
KM. He held BC scoreless
and hitless for three innings
while striking out six. BC
scored its only run in the
fourth inning when it got its
only hit.
Kings Mountain broke
the game open with six runs
in the fifth to take a 9-1 lead.
John Harmon Melton
pitched the fifth inning,
striking out the side on 10
pitches.
KM added four more
runs in the sixth and Joe Ruf-
falo struck out two in the
bottom of the inning to seal
the victory and put KM in
the championship game.
Kennedy was the leading hit-
ter with three hits. Bell and
Melton each had two hits’
and DJ Bagwell, Bryce
Fisher and Zach Crawford
had one apiece.
Kings Mountain opened
the tournament on Saturday
with a 14-0 victory over
Burke County American.
David Bell led. off the
game with a double off the
centerfield fence and Joe
Ruffalo followed with a dou-
ble to make the score 1-0.
John Harmon Melton then
blasted a 1-0 pitch over the
right center field wall to
make the score 3-0. :
Ruffalo led the offensive
attack with three hits. Bell
added two and Frank Stump,
Hunter ~~ Helms, Seth
Kennedy, DJ Bagwell and
Bryce Fisher had this.
Stump started on the
mound and pitched two in-
nings, allowing just one hit
and fanning three. Kennedy
and Helms pitched the final
two innings allowing no hits
and fanning two each.
Sunday, Kings Mountain
took on the Burke National
team and the bats were just
as hot as the day before, KM
collected, 15 hits and scored
21 runs in four innings to
win 21-0.
Stump led the offense
with three hits and Ruffalo,
Bagwell and Melton had two
each. Melton blasted his sec-
ond home run in as many
games. Bell, Price, Helms,
Kennedy, Blake Brooke and
Jake Woods all had a hit
apiece.
Helms, Bell and Ruffalo
combined for the shutout, al-
lowing just two this while
striking out eight.
Tuesday, the KM lads
edged West Lincoln 5-3.
Both pitchers kept the hitters
at bay to start the game.

off balance the first two in-
nings before finally giving
up a run in the top of the
fourth.
Bryce Fisher scored on a
passed ball to give KM a 1-0
lead. KM added two more
runs when Stump hit a two-
out single that plated John
Harmon Melton and Silas 7}
Price to put KM up 3-1.
West Lincoln battled
back to tie the game at 3-all
in the bottom of the fourth.
KM took the lead for
good in the top of the fifth
when a deep sacrifice fly by
David Bell drove in Seth
Kennedy, who had led off
with a walk.
Bell came in to pitch the
final 2.1 innings, striking out
six along the way. Kennedy
drove in the final run in the
sixth, a two-out single to
plate Stump.
Hunter Helms and Bryce
Fisher also had hits for KM.
