Eighty-five charged in drugs probe = DAVE BLANTON dave.kmherald@gmail.com The Cleveland County Sheriff’s Depart- ment in October charged 85 people with a total of 104 felonies and 165 misdemeanors as a result of a yearlong investigation that aimed to stem the manufacture and distribu- tion of methamphetamine and prescription drugs. The investigation, dubbed “Operation Prescribed Epidemic,” also resulted in co- caine, marijuana and weapons charges. Thirty-two Kings Mountain residents were among those charged. “The Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office recognizes that prescription medication di- version and methamphetamine production are the two quickest growing problems for Cleveland County, North Carolina,” said Cleveland County Sheriff Alan Norman. The operation “targeted people who aid and abet methamphetamine production and people who illegally sell their prescribed medication to further other drug use and/or sales,” according to a statement from Nor- man. The sheriff’s department formed a small taskforce comprised of the drug diversion investigator, narcotics investigators and a Community Interdiction Team to develop a list of people who were connected to people who manufacture and distribute metham- phetamine. Investigators began monitoring pseudoephedrine purchases, which were likely to be used solely for the production of methamphetamine. As of Oct. 31, 52 people had been ar- rested and arrest warrants are outstanding for another 33 people. During the operation, 85 people were charged with 104 felonies and 165 misdemeanors for a total of 269 charges. : The sheriff’s department reports that it +has seen a drastic reduction in the seizures of methamphetamine laboratories as a result of this investigation. Through October, sher- iff’s investigators have seized five meth labs in 2013. During that same period in 2012 in- vestigators had already uncovered 13 labs. While investigators are: working harder to uncover meth labs, the drop in seizures can be attributed to aggressive enforcement and the fact that several meth manufactures are currently incarcerated.
