The Mountaineers and Cava- liers are tied for last place in the SMAC 2 with 0-7 records. The Cavaliers are 1-9 overall, and the Mountaineers 2-8. When the two teams tee it up at 7:30 Friday the Mountaineers will have had two weeks to prepare for the game. East Burke is coming off a loss to Chase. Mountaineer coach Greg Lloyd attended that game last week on the Trojans’ field and was im- pressed with the East Burke eleven. Chase had beaten the Mountaineers a week earlier, 40- 28, with two fourth quarter touch- downs. They also pulled away from the Cavaliers late for a 28-7 win. “They looked good,” Lloyd said of the Cavaliers. “They have a balanced offense and throw the ball quite a big. They run a lot of spread and I-back.” The Cavaliers are led by 6-4 senior quarterback Eli Reese and have a good crop of experienced skill players. “They’re balanced,” Lloyd said. “They’re a good running team and good passing team. They have good size.” The Cavaliers have played some good teams tough games, in- cluding R-S Central, Chase and Shelby. “They were in the game with Chase until late,” Lloyd said. “This is going to be a tough task.” But, Lloyd feels like the Moun- taineers have had some good prac- tices this week and will be ready. They will be without freshman re- ceiver, Jake Merchant, who sprained his ankle in the loss to Chase, but everyone else who played against the Trojans should be at top form. “We’re hoping we can end the season with a victory for our sen- iors and give everybody something good to feel about going into next year,” Lloyd said. “We will miss Jake, but Xavier Johnson should be a little more ex- plosive and that will be a good thing. He won’t be hobbled as bad as he was in the Chase game.” Johnson, last year’s leading re- ceiver with 55 receptions for 850 yards, sat out the first nine games after injuring his foot in the Cleve- land County Jamboree. “The key for us will be to pick up where we left off against Chase and have a good mix of running and passing,” Lloyd said. “We will have to play with intensity and not have turnovers and don’t drop passes. We have to play hard for four quarters.” Kings Mountain junior quarter- back Brandon Bell should reach a milestone Friday as he is ap- proaching 2,000 yards of total of- fense. Despite missing two games due to injury, Bell has rushed for 637 yards on 114 carries and has hit 115 of 221 passes for 1,326 yards. Junior Tico Crocker leads the Mountaineers in receiving with 46 catches for 587 yards. KMMS wrestlers, spikers winners Kings Mountain Middle School’s wrestling and volley- ball teams won scrimmages Saturday at Shelby. The Patriot wrestlers won 68-30. “We wrestled well and learned a lot from the scrimmage,” said new coach Jason Bridges. Winning for KMMS by pin were Mason Nguyen, Reese Reinhardt, Landry Crawford, JT Cash, Estevan Vargas, Tiger Tuttanon, Sedrick Morgan, Collin Franks, RJ Bishop and Tyler Hunley. Also winning matches were Quenten Nguyen and Jerdon Pressley by major decision. Kings Mountain’s volleyball team won 25-5, 25-15 over Shelby and 25-22, 25-16 over Crest.
