David L. Huffstetler, age 83,
resident of 415 Range Road,
Kings Mountain, N.C., died

2014, at his

Huffstetler
and Mylie Dixon Huff-
stetler. He was also preceded
in death by his wife of 65
years, Julia Yarbro Huff-
stetler; brothers, Bobby
Huffstetler and Samuel
Bruce Huffstetler; sister,
Sarah Mae McDaniel.
Mr. Huffstetler was a
fabricator and drafting ex-
pert, retiring after 25 years:
from Mundy Machine Co,
Dallas, NC. He was a mem-
ber of Bethlehem Baptist
Church, Kings Mountain
and served in the United
States Navy during the Ko-
rean Conflict. Mr. Huff-
stetler enjoyed fishing,
golfing, farming, and gar-
dening.

devoted wife, sister, aunt,
and friend.

Judy Logan Herndon, age
76, a resident of Kings
Mountain passed away at
her home on Sunday, Janu-
ary 26, 2014. She was born
in Cleveland County, N.C.,
daughter of the late W.
Lawrence Logan and Helen
Cornwell Logan and was
also preceded in death by
her husband of 54 years,
Bob Herndon.
She was a member of
Kings Mountain Baptist
Church, a Sunday school
teacher, and a former mem-
ber of the Town and Country
Garden Club. She was a lov-
ing mother and grandmother
who loved to spend time
with her grandkids. She re-
tired after 40 years from
Kings Mountain District
Schools and Cleveland
County Schools as a
teacher’s assistant.
She is survived by

‘McClain sentenced
to eight months

pled guilty in Gaston
County Superior Court last
Tuesday to accidentally
killing\ Octavious Leon
Thomas, 26, 936 Shannon
Rd., Gastonia, in what he
said was “ horse playing
gone wrong.”
He was sentenced to
eight months behind bars on
charges of involuntary
manslaughter, ordered to
complete 250 hours of com-
munity service, pay court
costs and . reimburse the
Thomas family for funeral
costs. After he completes
three more months. of jail
time he will be released on
probation.
McClain had been in jail
since the night of March 20,
2013 when he admitted to
accidentally stabbing his
mother’s boyfriend.
According to court testi-
mony, the two were horse
playing with pretend objects
like wooden spoons and the
winner scored points. On
March 20 they had been at a
family ~~ barbecue and

That night back at home,
McClain said he wanted to
earn a point, grabbed a knife .
from the kitchen, ran to
Thomas and tripped, stab-
bing and puncturing the
man’s lung. |
Kings Mountain police
were called at 26 minutes
after midnight March 20,
2013 and found a bleeding
Thomas in the yard of the
residence shared by Mc-
* Clain and his mother, Felicia
Carothers. Thomas died at
the hospital. Police investi-
gated the incident as a homi-
cide. An officer in court
testified there was no evi-
dence of premeditation or
motive.
News media covering the
trial reported that Thomas’
mother spoke to Superior
Court Judge Eric Levinson
saying McClain had taken
something from her that she
could never get back. “He
won’t get to see his baby get
born, his kids will never
know him,” said Carolyn
Thomas.
