KM lady kickers beat East to go 8-1 in SMAC Kings Mountain High’s women’s soccer team ran its record to 8-1 in the SMAC and 8-2 overall Friday with a 3-0 victory at East Ruther- ford. Sara Smart scored all three goals for the Lady Mountaineers. Katy Robinson and Lind- say Barnes had assists. The Mountaineers got a great defensive effort from Mikayla = Price, Madie Skeith, MC Dellinger, Kim- berlee Farris and Lauren Gould. Carlton Korean War hero (ED. NOTE - Shu Carl- ton Stadium, formerly City Stadium, will be ded- icated Sunday at 2 p.m. Coach Carlton’s career at Kings Mountain High was interrupted in 1951 when he was recalled into the Marines for duty in Korea. He received the Bronze Star for heroism. The story below is reprinted from the March 13, 1952 Kings Mountain Herald). Marine First Lieutenant Everette L. (Shu) Carlton, formerly of Kings Moun- tain, has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal for heroic achievement in con- nection with operations against the enemy in Korea. Commander of a platoon of the 1st Marine Division Tank battalion, Lt. Carlton was cited for leaving his tank to successfully evacu- 1st LT. Carlton, who was called from his duties as teacher and football coach at Kings Mountain High School last March, has been in Korea since August 1951. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William C. Carlton of Winston-Salem. The citation reads: “For heroic achievement in connection with opera- tions against the enemy while serving with a Marine tank company in Korea on 11 Sept. 51. A tank platoon commander, Lt. Carlton was occupying firing positions in support of an attacking in- fantry regiment when the area was subjected to in- tense enemy small arms and mortar fire. Looking through his vision block, he ob- served a Marine infantry- man fall wounded about one hundred yards distant, in ter- rain which denied the ma- neuver of tanks. Without hesitating, he fearlessly dis- mounted from his tank, and dashed through the heavy enemy fire to reach the fallen Marine, passing through an enemy mine field to do so. He then carried the wounded man to another tank which was moving to the rear for a supply of am- munition and successfully completed his evacuation. “1st Lt. Carlton’s coura- geous actions undoubtedly saved the life of his wounded comrade and were in keeping with the highest . traditions of the United States Naval Service.” The award was author- ized by Major General C.G. Thomas, commanding offi- cer lst Marine Division (Rein.) Fleet Marine Forces. Lt. Carlton is also author- ized to wear the Combat “V7
