Wednesday, November 12, 2014 The Kings Mountain Herald | www.kmherald.com Basketball Mountaineers gearing up for good year With good size inside and good shooters and play- makers outside, Kings Mountain High men’s bas- ketball coach Grayson Pierce is looking to the up- coming season with a lot of optimism. Although he lost his top two scorers off last year’s team which finished 18-9 and went three rounds in the state playoffs, he has the mix of good returning play- ers and talented newcomers to make another run. The Mountaineers will scrimmage East Lincoln on the road Saturday at 1 p.m. and host Blacksburg, SC in a scrimmage at KM’s Parker Gym on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 6 p.m. before opening the regular season at home on Thursday, Nov. 20 against the South Point Red Raiders. MOINTAIN jh LF) Nelson McClain is expected to be one of the leaders of the Kings Mountain boys basketball team this season. The Mountaineers travel to East Lincoln Saturday for a scrimmage and host Blacksburg, SC next Tuesday. KM second In fall sports Wells Fargo Kings Mountain is sec- ond in the Wells Fargo points standings after com- pletion of fall sports in the South Mountain 2A/3A Conference. Shelby leads the race with 43 points. KM has 39.5, followed by Crest 38, Draughn 37, RS Central 33.5, East Burke 30, East Rutherford 15.5, Chase 13 and Burns 12.5. Points are awarded on a basis of 9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 with teams that win confer- ence championships getting nine points, and other places descending by one. Kings Mountain took first place in women’s vol- Page 5B leyball and women’s cross country; however, cross country points are combined with men’s cross country. There are no points awarded for women’s golf. JVs drop final game at EB Kings Mountain High’s JV football team was upset by East Burke 30-25 last Wednesday in Icard to end its season with a 7-3 record. The Mountaineers rallied after falling behind 24-6 at halftime but couldn’t pull out the win. Madisyn Bolin scored on a kickoff return for KM. Kavin Mosely scored two touchdowns and Malik Ban- ner added one. “We’re going to be a deep team,” Pierce said. “Hopefully we’ll be playing 11 or 12 deep. I feel like we will be as good, if not better than last year.” Pierce has been working with 10 “outstanding” ball players since official prac- tice began and he expects three more players — Tico Crocker, Julian Coulter and Shawn Adams — to join the team after the football sea- son is over. Practice has been a joy so far as everyone has shown improvement over last sea- son. In addition to be afore- mentioned football players, Pierce has seniors Zac Fun- derburke, Jacob Sneed, Dal- ton Cash and Nelson McClain back. Junior Jacob Skidmore and sophomore Josh Helton also played on the varsity last season.
