Pago 2 B® OBITUARIES Dr. John Charles McGill family physician over 42 years KINGS MOUNTAIN- Dr. John Charles McGill, 92, resident of 703 Hillside Tuesday, Novem- ber 11, 2014 at his home. He was born in Clover, SC to the late Waldo Knox McGill, Sr. and Elsie Sullivan Mc- Gill. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Kenneth H. McGill and W. K. McGill, Jr. In 1943 John was grad- uated from Erskine College and then Vanderbilt Uni- versity Medical School. He served in the United States Army during World War II as a public health officer in Kobe, Japan. In 1952 Dr. McGill lo- cated in Kings Mountain and began attending Boyce Memorial ARP Church where he served as Elder and faithful long-time member. He was the owner of the McGill Clinic, Kings Mountain, serving the com- munity as a family physi- cian for over 42 years. “Dr. John”, as he was known, loved his patients and was known for his compassion- ate care and gentle nature. He delivered over 2,000 ba- bies, cared for entire fami- lies and made house calls on a regular basis during his career. Dr. John was a man of many interests, including walking his beloved farm- land in York and Chero- kee counties; traveling to Erskine College to watch “Flying Fleet” basketball games; participating in Ro- tary Club activities; serving on the Board of Trustees of Erskine College; and, in his later years, going out to dinner with his friends “The Rowdy Boys.” He was devoted to the Kings Mountain commu- nity, and served for 53 years on the Board of Directors of Kings Mountain Sav- ings & Loan (now Bank of the Ozarks), where he was elected President and Chair- man of the Board during his tenure. One of Dr. McGill’s other loves was studying family history and attending McGill Reunions at Beth- any ARP Church. Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Mabel Hamilton McGill, Kings Mountain; sons, John Knox McGill and wife, Beth, and Charles Hamilton McGill and wife, Peggy, all of Belmont; daughters, Frances Sullivan McGill, Salisbury; Mer- The Kings Mountain Herald | www.kmherald.com edith Jane McGill, Cary; and Elizabeth McGill Cross and husband Robert “Rob” of Midlothian, VA; sis- ter, Elsie McGill Tinkler, Greenwood, SC and sister- in-law, Nancy T. A na- { tive of | Cleveland i County, he was the son of the late Gordon William and Annette Ware Hughes. David served in the Army from 1964-66. He was a member of Dixon Pres- byterian Church, an avid Clemson football fan, and had a love of fishing with his brother, Billy. He is survived by his daughter, Lori Hughes; brothers,, Billy Hughes and wife Mary and Jackie Hughes and wife Nancy, all of Kings Mountain; grand- children, Kayla Morrison of Forest City, Shianne, Jessica, Harley, and Mi- chael Shane Walker Jr, all of Shelby, and Damien Mc- Daniel of Kings Mountain; a very special friend, Doris McGinnis of Kings Moun- tain; and many nieces and nephews. Services were held Tuesday at 2p.m. at Dixon Presbyterian Church, with officiating by Rev. Randy Patterson. The family received friends on Tuesday from 12 from 1:30 p.m. at the church, and other times at the home of his brother, Jackie, 115 Hughes Dr., Kings Moun- tain. He was | born in Thacker, a WV on i Nov. 4, 1945 to Georgie Inice Chafin and Fred B. Ball. He is pre- ceded in death by his par- ents, his son, ‘Turk’ Lewis Glen Bell Jr., sister, Ollie ‘Pug’ Goforth and brothers Ray Ball and Kelly Ball. He is survived by his wife of 38 years Linda Ball; daughters, Amanda Ball, Margie Sanders and fiance Shawn Shinn and Debora Boone and husband, Robert Boone Jr., seven grandsons and step-grandsons and four granddaughters and step- granddaughters, two great-grandchildren and many other loved ones and friends. He wanted to help others even in death, therefore he requested for his'remains to be donated to science for research and study for anyone who needs them. In light of his requests, there will not be a traditional viewing and funeral. Upon investigating the incident, it was determined that Bennie Lee Hull, 58, had been cutting grass or perhaps blowing leaves next to a small pond located on his property. It was apparent that Mr. Hull had gotten too close to the bank or edge of the pond, causing the riding lawnmower to later. overturn into the pond. Carpenter said Olado Oglesby of Shelby, operat- ing a 2003 Mercury, backed from a parking space at 511 Linwood Road into a 2010 Toyota operated by Tracy Bolin, 514 Rhodes Avenue. Property damages were es- timated at $1000. OCT. 24: Officer H.W. Carpenter said that Major Loftin Sr. was backing his 2002 Ford into the drive- way of 501 Woodland Drive when it struck a 1998 Ford operated by Christo- pher Ramsey, Blacksburg, SC and owned by the City of Kings Mountain. Ram- sey was traveling north on Ford Street but had stopped while employees loaded garbage into the truck. Po- lice reported slight damage to the Loftin vehicle and no damage to the garbage truck. OCT. 25: Officer H.W. Carpenter charged Daniel James Soulia, Spattanburg, SC. Soulia was driving a 1996 Dodge, lost control of the vehicle nearly striking the guardrail before going into the embankment. Prop- erty damage was estimated at $1,000. NOV. 7: Officer G.L. McKinney said that ve- hicles operated by Jackie Forbes, 308 Scotland Dr., and Lakisha Brown, Balti- more, MD, were involved in an accident on I-85 South. Property damage was esti- mated at $400 to the Forbes vehicle, $4,000 damage to the Brown 2014 Hyundai, and $700 to a guard rail. NOV. 8: Officer H.W. Carpenter said that Bobby Ray Horne, 701 Oakland St., was leaving from a parked position on Oakland Street and struck a parked 2007 Ford owned by Amy Nelon of Rutherfordton. Property damages were es- timated at $5200. NOV. 9: Officer H.W. Carpenter said that Jamie Fox, Greer, SC, operating a 2007 Chevrolet, was travel- ing west in the southbound left lane of I-85 and when traffic abruptly slowed he attempted to switch to the right lane, lost control of the vehicle which ran off the right side of the roadway, hit a ditch, rolled over on the left side and then trav- eled a short distance where it flipped back onto the up- right position and came to a stop. Property damage was estimated at $20,000. NOV. 11: Officer F.L. Wittington said that Casey Black of Grover, operating a 2005 Ford, backed into Gold Street at Cansler and struck a 2007 Chevrolet operated by Johnny Lee Melton, 2092 Bethlehem Road. Property damages were estimated at $1500. NOV. 12: Officer H. W. Carpenter said that Paul Parker, 113 Brayton Lane, driving a 2003 Ford, backed into a parked city garbage truck at 909 S. Battleground Ave. Property damages were estimated at $3,000. NOV.12: Officer H. W. Carpenter said that a 2005 Ford driven by Amy Elrod of Gastonia was rear-ended by a hit and run driver at a red stop and go signal. Elrod said a woman got out of a black Toyota SUV and yelled “there’s no damage” and got back in the car, backed up and hit another vehicle. Property damage to the Elrod vehicle was es- timated at $5,000. NOV. 13: Pl. H. W. Carpenter said that a parked car owned by Myr- tle Bowlin, 510 Waco Rd. Dup. 2, was struck by a de- livery truck being backed by Joseph Smith of Shelby. Property damage was esti- mated at $1,000. NOV. 13:'Ptl. H. W. Carpenter said that vehicles operated by Ashley Floder of Gastonia and Vickey Thomas, 136 Lewis Curry Road, hit on US 74 Busi- ness doing slight damage to each car.
