KM/WH: Mountaineers fall in playoffs to West Henderson under frigid conditions From page 8 end Jake Merchant with a 10-yard touchdown pass and Sam Liss booted the PAT for a 7-0 Mountaineer lead. That would be their only | lead, though, as West's backs got exceptional block- ing on just about every play to charge ahead. “Obviously, it was a dis- appointing ending to a good season,” said Mountaineer coach Greg Lloyd. “But we’re very proud of our team. We reached one of our goals by bouncing back after a two-win season last year.” The Falcons answered KM’s touchdown with a + seven-play 69-yard touch- down drive capped off by Goings’ six-yard run at the 5:26 mark of the first period. After holding the Moun- taineers to three and out, the Falcons drove 80 yards . in 10 plays to take a 14-7 lead on Jackson’s four-yard run. Kings Mountain’s Xavier Johnson answered with a 90-yard kickoff return, but the Mountaineers’ extra point attempt failed and West hung to a 14-13 lead it would not relinquish. William Crouch added a one-yard touchdown run to put the Falcons up 21-14 in the second quarter and Fender picked off ,two Kings Mountain quarterback Brandon Bell rolls out for a pass. passes, including one at the . one yard line, to keep the Mountaineers out of the end zone. A one-yard run by Go- ings pushed the West lead to 28-13 at halftime, and touchdown runs of three yards by Fender and 18 by Jackson ran the margin to 41-13 with 2:54 left in the third quarter. Jackson finished with 180 yards on 19 carries, Go- ings 176 yards on 32 carries * and Fender 109 yards on 14 carries. Kings Mountain tacked on two more touchdowns, and had a golden opportu- nity to score another when a wide open hook and lateral was fumbled. Tico Crocker caught a 10-yard touchdown: pass with 12 seconds left in the third quarter to cut the mar- gin to 41-20, and Merchant closed out the scoring in the fourth quarter when he stripped the ball from a West back and ran it 60 yards for the final touchdown with seven minutes remaining. Late in the game he had a 58-yard reception but the Mountaineers’ final pass fell incomplete in the end zone. “It just didn’t go -our way,” said Coach Lloyd. “We had a good week of practice but just didn’t have a good game. But no ex- cuses. We have a lot of pos- itive feelings about this season.” FUTURE: Mountaineers looking toward bright future with returning starters From page 8 rently 8-4 after going 1-10 last season, The difference, though, is that West Henderson has a senior laden team while Kings Mountain returns a large number of starters, They will, however, have to replace good players like quarterback Brandon Bell, versatile back Tico Crocker, the school’s all-time leading pass receiver Xavier John- son, linemen Julian Coulter, Graham Keeter, Cory Hester and Colin Watkins, line- backers Dillon Frederick and Dwayne Capps, and re- ceiver/defensive back Shawn Adams. Starters who will return next: year include Marquis Camp, Chance Frederick, Josh Bell,» Dre Bell, Jake Merchant, Trevon Wilson, Darian MoClain, J air Mc- Cluney, DJ Sumpter, Cooper Short, Kenneth Williams, Gage Kornegay, Nick Hayes, Keenan Baker, and Max Peterson.
