Jim Ferebee has interviewed and is continuing to interview many Eagle Scouts for this series of stories. We thought we would intro- duce our readers to Jim.) Jim Ferehee Jim’ was born in July 1943 in Portsmouth, VA but grew up in the rural farming community of Birdsnest on the Eastern ‘Shore (ES) of Virginia. He was .a Cub ‘Scout for three years and then joined Boy Scout Troop 311 sponsored by Frank- town Methodist church. This troop was part of the Delmarva council (ES of VA, ES of MD and state of Del.). At the age of sixteen, he received his Eagle. His troop was an active troop with good adult leaders. He served as a patrol leader and as senior patrol leader. In working toward his Eagle He earned 27 Merit badges. His most sig- nificant memories of his years as a scout were the camping trips and attend- ing summer camp. In 1961 he had the honor of representing the Delmarva council in presenting scouting’s annual report to the governor of VA. Jim attended Virginia Tech earning a BS and MS in Metallurgical En- gineering. His first job was as a research engineer with Combustion Engi- neering in Chattanooga, TN. After seven years in the lab, he became a Qual- ity Engineer in QA depart- ment. In 1984, he moved to Kings Mountain as QA Manager when Combus- tion opened a facility here. 2000 marked the end of his full time employment since the plant closed and he was retired. Since then, he has had the opportunity to do contract QA work all over the world. Besides family, educa- tion and scouting, being a Christian has been a major part of his life. He was saved and baptized at the: age of nine in Red Bank Baptist Church in Mari- onville, VA, where he at- tended until going away to college. In Chattanooga, TN. he was active in the churches attended, serv- ing as a RA Leader, SS teacher, SS Dept. Direc- tor, Deacon, Chairman of Finance Committee, and Chair of two furnishing committees. Since com- ing to Kings Mountain, his family has been active members of First Baptist Church (FBC). He has the opportunity to serve here as a Deacon and Chair of Finance and Personnel committees and went on a mission trip to Honduras. He looks at his service as an adult Scout leader as his primary service to the church and his Lord. His Troop has awarded him the “Good Shepherd” adult religious award. He married his wife Jane in 1963 while in col- lege. Fifty one years later they have three children and ten grandchildren. Two of the children are in full time Christian service and his son is an Eagle Scout. In his community, he has served many years on the United Way Board of Directors serving two terms as Chairman of the Allocations Committee. At his plant, he headed up the annual United Way fund drive. Again, as with Festcityhondanc.com - fores Eagle Scout Jim Ferebee (right) with Governor of VA 1961 church, he considers his work with Scouts as his place of service. In, 1979, after having been out of Scouting for nearly 20 years, Jim got the opportunity to become the Scoutmaster of Troop 309 chartered by Hixson First Baptist Church in Chattanooga, TN (Cher- okee Council). In 1984, when he moved to Kings Mountain, FBC was seek- ing to reactivate Troop 92 and Jim again became a Scoutmaster. In 1992, the troop was designated as. the Troop of the Year in Battleground District (Cleveland County). He continued as SM until . 1996 when he stepped down to the less physi- cally demanding role of Assistant Scoutmaster. He has found this support- ing role to be every bit as fulfilling as that of Scout- master. During his tenure as an adult leader, he has been selected for OA (Brotherhood Member), attended and completed Woodbadge training, at- tended a week of training at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, and done a week of sailing at BSA | YOUR TAX TIME, Hi No credit, bad credit, : 2005 Merci Auto., leather seats, power seats, power pedals, brand new tires. 3rd row seating, brand new tires, local trade, clean Carfax, great MPG’s! The Battleground District has awarded him the District Award of Merit, awarded him the Rev. Dr. Charles Bell Award, and he have been awarded the Scoutmaster Award of Merit. He have served as an instructor in “Basic Scout Leader Training”, been on staff of Council Junior Leader Training, and served on the District Eagle Board of Review. His 35 years as an adult scout leader has been most rewarding. Scouting, and it princi- ples, have been a guide to his life from 11 years age until now. He finds his ac- tions, values, and thoughts reflect them. Things he learned as a scout are still in use whether it is tying a knot, cooking a cobbler in a dutch oven, finding the North Star, identifying a tree or just carrying and using a pocket knife. At summer camp with his troop (his main camping activity now) he finds himself singing old scout songs and rejoicing in watching our scouts enjoy the same experiences that he did as a scout.
