McWhirter retired optometrist MOORESBORO - Dr. Blake Mills McWhirter, 90, passed away Sunday, April 19, 2015 at his home sur- rounded by his loving family. He was born in Cleve- land County on January 12, 1925 to the late Wil- liam Lafayette and Mattie Helen DeVine McWhirter. He retired from the Naval Reserves and served during WWII and the Korean War. Dr. McWhirter was a retired Optometrist who served Shelby for over 50 years. He was a life-long member of First Baptist Church-Shelby where he served as a deacon, a Sun- day school teacher, a choir member, and played the hand bells. He also served on a committee that orga- nized the first Choral Soci- ety in Shelby. He enjoyed working in his yard and watching the Atlanta Braves and his favorite musical was “Les Miserables”. Dr. McWhirter was a loving husband, father, grandfa- ther, and friend. In addi- tion to his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, Joe and Walden McWhirter. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Melba Tindall McWhirter; son, Mark McWhirter and wife Lisa; daughters Tina McWhirter Cansler, and Gina Lynn McWhirter; grandchildren Adam J. Wilkinson and Ashton Julie Cansler; nieces, Rita and Marie Ann; and nephew Eddie Joe. Blake was also survived by his “canine compan- ions” Gracie and Camo; and Tex “the goat”. A celebration of life service was held Saturday, April 25, 2015 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Shelby with full military honors with Rev.Tony Tench officiating the ser- vice. A na- tive of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Summie and Minnie Con- nor Poston. Bobby served in the Air Force, and was a member of First Baptist Church. He taught Ele- mentary and baseball at Patterson Springs for three years. He started teaching at Cleveland Tech from the start of its establishment, later retiring after more than 20 years of service. He was a proud Eagle Scout recipient. Bumgardner retired KMHS coach KINGS MOUNTAIN - John H. Bumgardner, 61, of 906 Crescent H| Circle, died Saturday, April 26, 2015 at Carolinas Medical Cen- ter in Char- lotte. A Kings Mountain native, he was born Aug. 31, 1953 to Berdina (Bertie) Wells Bumgardner and the late John Henderson Bumgardner. He was married for 30 years to Deborah Smith Bumgardner, who died May 3, 2014. A retired Kings Moun- tain High School teacher and coach of football and track for 30 years he had worked after retirement on Aug. 31, 1977 at Coldwell Bankers in Gastonia. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his son, Brian L. Smith of Lake Wylie, SC; his sister, Susan Bumgard- ner Hart of Kings Mountain; two granddaughters, Isabella Smith and Anna Grace Smith; and his nephew, Matt Hart.
