Bruce K. Bridges, Jr.,
Clover, SC resident
On the
beautiful
sunny af-
ternoon
of May
{ 4th, 2015,
{Bruce
= Keith
Bridges,
Junior made it home to the
join the Lord and so many
others he loved, most espe-
cially the welcoming arms
of his Granny and PawPaw
Robinson.
Bruce grew up in the
idyllic town of Clover, South
Carolina, a place he viewed as
his real-life Mayberry and one
that he could not have loved
more. When Bruce graduated
from Clover High, he went
to bleed orange at Clemson
University. He loved his Ti-
gers and his friends there, but
stayed closely connected to
Clover and the loved ones in
it.
The light of Bruce’s life
was serving as a mathematics
teacher then assistant princi-
pal for 23 years, most of those
at White Knoll Middle School
in Lexington, South Carolina.
The colleagues and students
whose lives he touched there
_ responded with an outpour-
ing of love during his battle,
and every card, call, and care
package lifted his spirit and
gave purpose to his fight. As
an educator, Bruce was not
only characterized by his ex-
emplary work ethic and intel-
ligence, but his empathy: He
remembered the names, per-
sonalities, and needs of thou-
sands of students long after
they left the halls he walked
each day.
. Bruce was remarkably ac-
cessible, genuine, and unpre-
tentious, yet still a true scholar
and academician. Best put by
a beloved former colleague,
“while enthusiastically able
to quote scenes and dialogue
from ‘Mayberry’ Bruce was
just as articulate speaking
the languages of higher math
or Honors English.” He be-
lieved both in the students
who initially shined, as well
as the ones who needed a lit-
tle extra light to do so. His
family has been told that his
whistling, Clemson orange
overalls, and big grin will be
missed in his school’s halls.
Most of all Bruce loved
God, his school and those in it,
Clover, and his family. Bruce
delighted in God’s creations,
from the flowers he replanted
in his grandparent’s yard to
his beloved horse Blackie to
the incredible landscapes of
the West. He was also a con-
noisseur of music and televi-
sion with a steel-trap vault of
a mind full of trivia, I Love
Lucy, and The Beatles.
Bruce never had a bad
day, in spite of the pain and
suffering that accompanied
an unexpected and untimely,
yet most of all courageous,
battle against cancer. Instead,
he used his grin and his irre-
pressible spirit to lift up those
around him. Inconceivably,
he used his trials and trib-
ulations as reminders of all
the blessings he had and was
thankful for. Bruce was at
peace with his passing: He
made it clear beforehand that
he was at peace and ready—
but not giving up—that his
only concern was for those he
loved and left behind, includ-
ing a yet to be born nephew
he had much hoped to meet.
When he was ready to go
home, he was surrounded by
love, his parents, a loving
aunt, his baby sister and her
husband—and their three very
special children who brought
light into his life during some
of his darkest days.
Bruce and his family are
immensely grateful to Em-
ory’s Winship Cancer Insti-
tute and the care he received
there. His doctors, nurses,
and caregivers also became
his friends—Bruce had that
way about him—and he was
thankful for all of them, most
especially Drs. Kudchadkar,
Khan, and Lawson, among so
many others. They gave him
several happy months that he
would not have otherwise ex-
perienced and shared.
Bruce’s life was marked
by faithfulness, integrity,
humility, compassion, and a
playful sense of humor. He
lives on through a great leg-
acy embodied in the tens of
thousands of lives he touched.
In addition to his school fam-
ily, Bruce leaves behind his
beloved mother Linda, father
Bruce, baby sister Ashley—
her family of her husband
Christopher, Andrew, Eliza-
beth and Spencer, and many
close cousins and other fam-
ily members who brought
immeasurable joy to his life.
All of those will miss Bruce
everyday and know he’s smil-
ing on us now.
Bruce’s life was’ cele-
brated with a visitation at
M.L. Ford and Sons in Clo-
ver, South Carolina on Fri-
day, May 8, 2015 from 6-8.
The family also received
visitors at Oakdale Presby-
terian Church on May 9th
from 12:30 until his service
begins at 2. The service was
followed by a burial at Beer-
sheba Presbyterian Church.
While flowers are welcome
as memorials, as Bruce loved
those so much, folks—as
Bruce would say—may also
make donations to The Bruce
Bridges Scholarship Fund by
mailing a check marked with
Bruce’s name to The Lexing-
ton County School District
One Educational Foundation,
PO Box 1869, Lexington, SC
29071. After all, Bruce loved
“his kids” even more than his
flowers.
