States, high school gen-
erally refers to grades 9
to 12. In Canada, each
province .and territory
has its own education
system, so secondary
schools vary with re-
gards to grade levels. In
other areas of the world,
high school may encom-
pass the equivalent to
grades 6 through 12 in
the United States. The
phrase "high school"
owes its origins to Scot-
land, where the world's
oldest secondary school,
Edinburgh's Royal High
School, was established
in 1505. It is believed
this school served as
a model for the first
public high school in
the United States, the
English High School,
which was founded
in Boston in 1821.
Today, there are many
high schools across the
world. In terms of en-
rollment, high schools in
the New York City area
