Spring foothall practice over, summer drills begin June 15 Kings Mountain High completed its 10 days of spring football practice Tuesday. This is the first year the NCHSAA has allowed spring practice. No heavy hitting is allowed, but teams went through physical con- ditioning, learning plays, hitting sleds, etc. Head coach Greg Lloyd said the turnout was be- tween 80 and 90 every day, not counting incoming freshmen who cannot join the team until after the last day of school. KMHS students will be taking exams the rest of this week and will begin sum- mer workouts on June 15. She is joined on the team by teammates Mikeala Bell, Leah Herndon, Ashton Withers and Miranda Ellis. The five all-stars led the Lady Mountaineers to the SMAC championship and three rounds in the state 3A playoffs. They had an over- all 20-3 record, KM’s best season since 2007 when they finished third in the state. ; Hester, who has already signed with Tusculum Col- lege, not only was the top pitcher in the SMAC but also led the Lady Mountain- eers with 10 home runs. The four other KM all- stars were the best in the SMAC at their position. Herndon was a four-year starter and caught the past two seasons. She was also the team’s leadoff hitter. Bell played centerfield and committed only one error the entire season. She “also saw action in the pitch- er’s circle as the #2 starter and #1 relief pitcher. Ellis started at first base and moved to center when Bell was on the mound. Withers spent the entire season at shortstop, where she was an outstanding de- fensive player. She also was the #2 home run hitter be- hind Hester. Hester, Bell and Hern- - don are three of the six se- niors on this year’s team. Ellis and Withers will return next season to help the Lady Mountaineers make another playoff run. Numerous other Moun- taineers were named to the spring all-conference teams. All of them helped KMHS win the Conference Wells Fargo Cup, which goes to the school with the best overall athletic program in the conference. Baseball players in- cluded senior outfielder Brandon Bell, junior short- stop Will Wilson and soph- omore pitcher-outfielder Madisyn Bolin. Bell has al- ready signed to play outfield at Catawba Valley Commu-- nity College, and Wilson has committed to NC State. Bolin made great strides on the mound the second half of the season and should be among the top pitchers in the conference for two more years. (File photo) the Mountaineer golf team, which not only won the SMAC with an undefeated record but also. took the Western North Carolina Re- gional championship. The Mountaineers finished ninth in the state and have all but one golfer returning. Selected All-SMAC were freshman Alex Goff, who was the Western NC individual champion, senior’ Miles Robinson, Carson Bailey, and Dawson Adams. State qualifier Gibson Conner and Dylan Ervin represented the Moun- taineers on the All-SMAC tennis team. The Mountain- eers finished second in the conference after dethroning perennial champion Shelby last season. Making the All-SMAC . women’s soccer team were Virginia Dellinger, Cassidy Calhoun, Lyndsey Barnes and Kimberlee Farris. They led the Lady Mountaineers to a third place finish in the SMAC behind Shelby and Burns, and gained a berth in the state 3A playoffs. Numerous members of the KMHS track teams were chosen All-SMAC. Girls included Sarah Scism (long jump), Gwen- dolyn Hopper (triple jump), Kayla Capps (pole vault), Cassie Morton, Mackenzie Smith, Caroline Foster and Kaitlyn Moss (4x800 relay team), Erica Carpenter (100 meter hurdles), Ja’My- iah Pressley (100 meters), Tynesha Merriman, Sarah Scism, Ka’Myiah Press- ley and Ja’Myiah Pressley (4x200 relay), Tynesha Merriman (200 meter), and Kaitlyn Moss (3200 meter). Making the boys team were Jamion McCoy in the shot put, Bryan Sanders in the discus, and Josh Beheler and Aaron Smith in the pole vault. Former KM players finish college year Former Kings Moun- tain High athletes recently wrapped up their spring sports seasons on the col- lege level. Former Mountaineer pitchers Heath King and Landon Bolin were mem- bers of the Belmont Abbey baseball team. King pitched 10.1 innings in nine relief appearances. He gave up eight hits, three runs (none earned), walked two and struck out three. Bolin, a freshman, pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up three hits and two runs while fanning one. The Crusaders finished 25-25 overall and 16-11 in Confer- ence Car- olinas. Fresh- man Alex Reynolds hit .232 for the UNC Charlotte 49ers. He participated in 33 games with nine starts.
