Page 4B EAST GASTON: Mounties put up fifth highest point fotal at KMHS From Page 1B offense. Our offensive line played very well. We had a good mix of running and passing.” There was no clue of what was to come when Kings Mountain’s defense held the Warriors to three and out on the game’s open- ing possession. It took little time for the Mountaineers to show their offensive strength as they took over after a punt on their own 37 and scored in nine plays on a two-yard touchdown run by J’Air McCluney, who would fin- ish with 158 yards rushing and two touchdowns. East Gaston answered with a six play, 68-yard drive that ended with Nick Ferens scoring from five yards out, but the Warriors failed on a two-point con- version try, leaving KM up 7-6. Kavin Mosely returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards to the Warrior eight, but the Mountaineers commit- ted their only turnover two plays later. The host team drove 96 yards to score on Adams’ 34-yard pass to Fer- ens and go up 13-7 as the first quarter ended. The air show was on after that, with KM scoring on its next six possessions to take a 42-20 lead. The Mountain- eers punted for their only time on their second posses- sion of the second half, but scored on their final three possessions to stay at least three touchdowns ahead the rest of the way. Kings Mountain ran for 226 yards. Burns’ five TD passes went to Mosely (2), Jake Merchant (2) and Chance Fredrick (1). Burns and his team- mates, who got great block- ing from the offensive line, . were able to take advantage of four talented receivers — Merchant with a personal career high eight receptions for 180 yards, Chance Fred- rick 3-76, Mosley 3-52 and Madisyn Bolin 3-49. Kings Mountain accu- mulated 583 yards total of- fense, but their total yardage was even higher than that as Mosley and McCluney combined for 166 yards on their two long kick returns. East Gaston rolled up 447 yards of offense with a strong running attack featuring quarterback Alex Adams and fullback Tyler Spurling, and an excellent passing game featuring Adams to Ferens. Spurling gained 162 yards rushing and Ferens, listed on the EG roster as an “athlete,” which he proved to be, caught seven passes for 155 yards and three touchdowns. “It was a sweet win,” Coach Lloyd said. “We took some strides. We made some mistakes but we saw some improvement.” Despite giving up 42 points, Lloyd said the de- fense played well. “When you can run and throw and have the ex- perience they (East Gas- ton) have, it takes a really strong defense to stop it,” he said, “Both offenses did a good job exposing the other team’s weaknesses. I’m glad we scored as many points as we did.” FORESTVIEW: KMHS faces reigning Big South champs From Page 1B had some success here (at Gamble Stadium). It seems like in the past we've won over there and they’ve won over here. We're going to have to get ready and see if we can get better.” The Mountaineers should go into the game at full strength. Linebacker Bryan Sanders was injured early in last week’s game and has a badly bruised forearm but should play. Darian McClain continues to be hampered by a sore shin. Lloyd has been pleased with how some younger players have blended in with the offense and feels if they continue to progress the team will be in good shape. “Darrin Burns was very poised and accurate last week,” he said. “He threw good balls for the receivers to catch, and they showed they can catch them. I hope there’s a lot more of that coming, : “With (Kavin) Mosely on one side and (Jake) Mer- chant on the other, (Mad- isyn) Bolin at the slot and Chance Fredrick at tight end, he has some good re- ceivers and we’re trying to get them all involved. Our offensive line is really blocking well and giving them good support.” SMAC 2A/3A STANDINGS Team Conf.
