c THE KINGS MOUNTAIN MIRPOR SEPTEMBER 29TH. 1971, PAGE 9 Two linemen, Tim Livings ton of Anderson, South Car olina, and Hardin Davis of Cherryvllle, North Carolina, were named the outstanding players in Gardner-WebbCol lege’s grid loss to Newberry. Livingston, a 210 pound sop homore offensive tackle, was named the most outstanding offensive player and Davis, a 230 pount defensive guard, was named tne best defensive player in the Bulldog’s 20- 0 loss. Davis made nine individual tackled and assisted in 12 other tackles. He also re covered one fumble and made a tackle which caused a fum ble. The Bulldog coaching staff picks the outstanding players after viewing the films of the game and grading the play of the gridders. “We wer e not at all sat isfied with the play of either G-W^s Ken Reid Lost For Season Gardner-Webb College grid star, Ken Reid of Charlotte, has been lost for the season to the Bulldogs and was to undergo knee surgery Tues- I day morning in Shelby. I The 6-3 split end was in jured in pre-season practice and was able to play less than two minutes in the Bull dog’s opening game against Lenoir Rhyne. He did not play against Newberry. Reid is a junior at the college. He led the Bulldogs in scoring in 1970 with eight touchdowns and he caught 37 passes for 7S0 yards. His longest reception was a 67 yard pass from Ray Hannon, quarterback against Mars HUl. “We certainly hate to lose Ken,’’ said He^ Coach Geo rge Litton. "He is a fine football player and we were counting on him this year for some pass offense. How ever, the doctors feel that this work should be done and we did not want to take a chance on any permanent in jury to him.” The bulldogs will begin Monday to prepare for their October 2nd trip to Burling ton to meet Eton College. The Bulldogs stand 1-1 for the season which includes a 24-6 win over Lenoir Rhyne and a 20-0 loss to Newberry. Elon whipped the Bulldogs 30-12 last year and Coach Litton’s men will have this well in mind when they visit the home of the Fighting Christians. Elon opened the season with an upset 7-6 win over Wofford. The Christ ians than dropped a 14-7 game to North Carolina Central. BY JOHN KILGO KQ SYNDICATE After Super Sunday Number One and seven hours of watch ing TV football, my eyeballs are bleeding and my wife is griping and I have these ob- kservations: I The networks should find 'a diplomatic way to exper ience line difficulties when they get a game like Cleve land-Houston, That was rated X. Neither team is Super Bowl material. The Colts and the Jets pro vided about as many thrills as a spotlight dance at the Old Folks Home. The Jets without Joe Namath would have their hands full against the Mercy School of Nursing. Baltimore, on the other hand, is very, very good. And if Sunday weren’t enough, 1 stayed up all night Monday to watch Detrolt-Mlnnesota create their own earthquake. People don’t hit that hard in 9 o’clock traffic. But out of my sound box came the ob noxious voice of Howard Co- sell. Cosell likes to say he has brought "truth" to sport- casting. That’s an unfunny joke. I’ve never heard Cosell say anything that made any difference. I don’t know about the rest of you but TV football is going to kill me. For some reason, 1 cannot stand the commerl- cals that interrupt the game I and always head for the ice ox at that time. By the Lime the mercy of Sunday night finally arrives, I am put to bed, not knowing if I will die of a heart attack or sto mach cramps — but certain that I will not live to watch another game. **• The death of North Carol Ina football player Bill Arnold our offense or our defense,” said Head Coach George Lit ton. " However, these two men did grade out with good grades and we are grateful that they came through when we needed them so badly." The Bulldogs have an off- week Saturday and will use the open date to get ready tor a trip to Burlington on Oct. 2nd, when they will visit the Fighting Christians of Elon College. Elon jumped off to a fast start with a stunning 7-6 win over powerful Wofford. The Christians, however, were brought back to earth when powerful North Carolina Cen tral whipped them 14-7. Elon beat the Bulldogs 30- 12 last year and 63-7 the year before, so there are several numbers of the present G-W squad looking tor some reven ge. Comment On Sports After Super Sunday And 7 Hours Of TV is a sad and tragic chapter in sports. 1 have never met a coach who didn’t worry about such things happening. Football practice starts in the stifl ing heat of August and the very nature of the game Is physically demanding. Coaches have to get their players in shape and they must constantly ask themselves how much work should be done I have been around several football camps and have never seen an easy one. There will be other people much more expert than 1 to comment on this situation. There will be others less expert than I who will also comment on it. Like others who enjoy com petitive athletics, I have a deep feeling of sadness for the Arnold family. I would hope that such incidents never occur again but as sure as football is played, it will hap pen again. *** Don’t look now, but college basketball practice starts in less than a month. An early prediction; South Carolina’s Tom Riker, now that coach John Roche has graduated, will be one of the nation’s top players. The only thing that held him back the two previous years was that Roche wouldn’t let him feel the bas ketball. Can anybody beat the Orioles in the World Series? I don’t think so. . .. Tim Rossovlch is the rather eccentric line backer for the Phlladephla Eagles. It is reported that Rossovlch accepted a chall enge to a foot race but be fore he ran, he drank a quart of motor oil. BASEBALL * * * BY PETE PRITCHIE Washington, D. C.~ While it was relatively easy for the Baltimore Orioles to coast in again this year, in the eastern American divi sion, and easy also for Oak land in the west, it may not be that way again next year in the junior Major League. The National always has a fight and this year was no different. Pittsburg finally made it look easy In Septem ber in the east but it had been a race in both National divisions all year. The new competition in the American may come from Detroit and Chicago next season. The White Sox are hustling, young club and have their eyes on Oakland’s flag. Minnesota is not like ly to be as weak again, either. If Kansas City im proves, the western divi sion race might be a good one In 1972. In the eastern division, it seems likely the Tigers will trade the dangerous slugger, Willie Horton, for pitching help, which they desperately need. The Tigers played better ball without Willie in September than they had in Junior High Patriots Continue W in Streak Central Jr. High Patriots overpowered the Gaston Day JV’s here Saturday Night, 18- 0 to run the Patriots win ning streak to 10 games with out a defeat. The win left the Patriots second this year at 2-0. Quarterback Steve Southwell hit Tommy Manning with a 29 yard pass to open the scoring for Central. In the second half, Jimmy Thompson went 21 yaixls to stretch the lead to 12-0. In the fourth quarter, Don McDevltt swept right end for a 40 yard touch down run making the score 18-0. The Patriots defense was outstanding inholdingGas ton Day to only 20 yards total offense. Central’s next game will be at Shelby, Thursday at 6:30 P.M. in Blanton Stadium. Mia Farrow, star of this film, seem destined to make horror films ("Rosemary’s Baby and “Secret Cere mony”). As Sarah, a blind girl, she is visiting in her uncle’s lovely country home. The early scenes show Sarah returning from an after moon horseback ride with a young man who leaves her at the front door. Sarah skillfully makes her way around in the house and passes the hours away until she r e t i r e s. It is the next day when she realizes some thing is wrong and there is no contact with her rela tives. The viewers already know something is wrong for all of her relatives have been murdered. The remainder of the film is not suspense but horror as Sarah tries desperately to escape the killer who has returned.
