ed its 9A Rating from the
N.C. Fire Insurance Rating
Bureau in Raleigh, according
to Chief Wayne Self. The

first of October within a four

fects of a northwest wind
and wrote that the best time
to do business with a man
was when the wind was out
of the northwest.
This is true because usu
ally our high-pressure clear
weather systems come from
the northwest. This high
pressure, giving one a feel
ing of mild exhilaration and
a cheerful mood.is especial
ly welcome in the early fall
after the hot humid weather
of late summer.
So, in a general sense, a
northwest wind is a sign of
cheerfulness and "busi
ness” weather.
Though there’s little
chance it could happen, an
organization in the Philip
pines has begun to urge that
this nation of37,000,000 be
come the 51st state in the
United States!
This effort begins at a
time when other Latins and
natives in Puerto Rico are
also considering becoming
a U.S. state. Hopefully, the
people on both islands will
prefer independence.
The experiment of going
beyond the hemisphere to
add Hawaii is still to be
proven wise or unwise. In
any event, the addition of
Alaska and Hawaii didn’t
add huge blocs of ixeoiiles
with little in common with
the origins, purposes, cul
ture and government of the

Despite current adver
tising and promotion about
new low-cost fares, today’s
best buy for scheduled round-
trip jet service to Europe is
International Air Bahama
from Nassau or Icelandic
from New York.
lAB is now offering a one-
to-sixteen day excursion fare
to and from Europe for $265.
Though mentioned in this
column on one or two occa
sions previously, this fare
is worth repeating because
it is the best bargain, other
than the charters, European
travelers can find.
The ads about new, low
airline fares read, in small
print below, that the low
fares are applicable begin
ning next February—four
months from now. lAB fares
have been low from the be
ginning of its service.
Prank Me nick, regional
sales manager for lAB, says
fares might at a later date
change for the better, though
he sees no price competition
right now. He says the lAB
fare for a man and his wife,
from Miami to Luxembourg
and return, is less than the
fare for the man alone on any
scheduled airline flying from
Miami, for a trip of less than
17 days.
"A business man and his
wife flying with us, round-
trip from Miami, will pay
$614—or $32 less than the
$646 single fare on the major
scheduled airlines. Also,
our passengers can stop
over in Nassau if they wish
to add a sun tan to their Eu
ropean trip,” Menick says.
He adds that few of the
other scheduled airlines of
fer one-class service with
free beverages of all kinds
plus excellent Quisine ex
cept in their first-class sec
tions, lAB offers such serv
ice to all its passengers.
Admittedly, the new low
fates coming into effect next
year will pose aquestion
for lAB-whether to lower
fares to continue beating the
competition. What the major
airlines are doing is cutting
their rates to a level lower
than lAB rates, just a bit
higher than that of charter
carriers.
If lAB cuts rates to stay
well below the major scheds
after February 1st. the trav-
ler will have the best-ever
bargain opportunity next
year. As of the moment, and
until February, it will pay
many living in the north and
west to fly to Nassau, to
leave for Europe!

junior. Without Mays and
Willie McCovey, the Giants
have about as much color as
a battleship on maneuvers.
Pittsburgh has class in its
movement and some astonish
ing power at the plate. But
the Pirates aren’t as exciting
as their name.
Football simply has me
thinking about touchdowns and
pitchouts and the perfectly
executed runback of a punt
with a wall of blocking. It
makes the baseball season
seem fuzzy.
Baseball people ought to get
smart and play the Series in
mid-September when a man
can think straight. Watch a
pro game on television, then
switch to a baseball game.
It’s like viewing a horse race
on one channel against a har
ness race on the other. I’m
sure both will have their ded
icated fans, but the fastest
and most pulsating should win
out. Football’s tempo is the
big winner in the fall.
