Newlyweds Must Make
Financial Plans Early
Raleigh — Brides and
grooms soon find out that
two can live as cheaply as
one—but for only half as
long.
When this awareness
hits, the young couple has
to make concrete plans con
cerning money matters. If
they have not already done
so, note extension family
relations specialists, North
Carolina State University.
Before marriage, both
young people could spend
money pretty well as they
pleased. But not after
marriage. The money was
his or hers; now It’s theirs.
'The couple will face
these questions. Who opens
charge accounts ? Who pays
the bills? What kind of
bank account will we have?
Does one have to ask the
other for money? Is one
accountable to the other?
The best way to decide
money matters Is together,
the specialists believe. As
a couple you need to discuss
abilities and ambitions. You
need to determine who needs
to do what and who needs to
have what done for him. Find
out who can keep the check
book balanced. Find out
whose judgement on mer
chandise is sound.
‘‘No less Important,”
say the specialists, ‘‘Is the
revealing of feelings.” If
one resents having to ask
the other for money, as he
probably does, say so. If
one thinks that ‘ ‘the head of
the house” has certain
responsibilities, say so. To
hide such feelings is far
more divisive than to reveal
them.
You may save yourselves
a lot of grief by making and
using a budget, the spe
cialists point out. A budget
can help you get down to
specifics.
The first step in making
a budget Is to decide what
you as a couple want and
need—that is, to set up
goals. Some may be goals
for the future; some for the
present.
Step two is to estimate
the amount of Income you
expect to have in the planning
period, whether you are
keeping the budget for a
week, a month or a year.
As step three, take a look
at all parts of the budget
and see where you can adjust
It, if your spending exceeds
your budget. Examine your
buying plans and try again
to work out a plan that will
give you what you need and
some of the things you want.
Money doesn’t have to be
a problem for a young couple,
even if you don't have very
much of it. Rather, dealing
with money matters can be
another thread tying the two
of you together, the family
relations specialists be
lieve.

cause of my poor health, it
is impossibie for me to go
to the social security office.
Can someone from the so

my home to help me fill out
a claim for payment on
some doctor bills?
A. Yes, if necessary, a
social security representa

to help you file your claim.
However, in many cases you
can get the help .vou need
over the telephone. Call any
social security office and
ask them for assistance.
They will complete your
claim form and mail it to
you for your signature. You
can then mail the claim
form and your medical bills
to the Medicare office.

LOUISA’S
LETTER
Dear Louisa,
If my husband’s mother
lives with us should she
sit in the front seat of the
car when we take a ride or
go to church. I would like
to know what is the proper
thing to do?
Eloise-Kan.
Answer:
I do not live with my son
but I ride with him and his
wife a great deal and this
is what I do. When they come
for me M usually says
"Mother, sit up there with
Tom” and I usually say I
prefer the back seat. If the
ride is short and they insist,
the three of us sit in front
with me next to the door.
Of course 1 am well and
alert but the situation could
be different if I had arthritis
and found it difficult to get
in the back seat.
I think it makes a differ
ence, also, if the mother is
invited occasionally for a
ride or is a rather regular
passenger. On the occasion
al ride I think it would be
proper for the daughter-in-
law to offer the older lady
a seat by her son but if it
is a regular thing with mother
living in the house I think
she should be the one to ask
for the rear seat. Personally,
I couldn’t care less whether
I sat in the front or the back
and a wife should always
come first with her husband.
Mother will probably have
more attention if she is
agreeable and easy to get
along with.
Louisa.
Dear Louisa,
I am a forty year old
woman with one child who
is married. I have been very
friendly with a man who is
in his late sixties. He is
well fixed as to finances
and seems to be in good
health. He has asked me to
marry him and I am thinking
of accepting him altho’ my
sisters are opposed to it.
They say I will be taking
on an old man to take care
of.
Now, Louisa, I am not
out looking for romance but
it would be nice to have an
intelligent man to talk to in
the evening or to have some
one logo with me to theaters
or other places in the even
ing. What do you think of
these companionship mar
riages for lonely people’
M-Tenn.
Anthony Quinn’s ’’The Man
and the City” is bobbing
about at 66th place. Bring
ing upthe rear is "Shirley’s
World.” with Shirley Mac-
Laine.
THERE IS an increase in
the number of hours people
are now spending watching
Answer:
It depends a great deal
on the condition of the man
you are thinking of marry
ing. Some people in their
sixties are active and alert
"Others are ready for a rock
ing chair and do not care
about going places.
Not all people continue
to be romantic as they grow
older and congenial com
panionship is a very satis
factory kind of life for such
people.
But you are rather young
to be tying yourself down
to a man so much older than
you. I think 1 would give it
some thought before I de
finitely decided on such a
marriage if I were you.
Louisa.
Dear Louisa,
I am in_ the sixth grade.
My mother says I am too
young to wear hose! All the
girls in the fifth grade wore
them except me! Do you
think I am old enough to wear
hose’
H.S.--Va.
Answer:
I know how hard it is for
young people to dress dif
ferently from their friends
so I sympathize with your
situation.
But I think wearing hose
depends on, at least, two
things--how large you are
and if you are prepared to
take care of them. Hose are
frail and expensive and un
less a person is very care
ful wearing hose can run in
to a great deal of money.
Why not ask mother to com
promise by buying you two
pairs and see how long they
last.
