Mountaineers Close Season With Four Wins Mirror Photos By Lem Lynch Kings Mountain High School’s football team closed out its 1971 season Friday night at John Gamble Stadium, losing a 43-18 decision to Lincolnton’s Wolves. The loss gives the Mountaineers a final re cord of four wins, four losses and two ties. The win earned Lincolnton second place in the Southwestern conference and the Wolves will go against unbeaten South Point Friday night in the first round of the association playoffs. Kings Mountain was never in the game here Friday in suffering its worst loss of the year. Lincolnton jumped off to a 13-0 halftime lead, increased it to 20-0 in the third quarter and put 23 points on the board in the fourth quarter. The Wolves ran up 384 yards rushing in win ning their fifth straight ^ter three consecutive early-season losses. Lincolnton added 94 yards through the air. Kings Mountain managed just 133 yards rush ing but David Bolin added 120 through the air. Seventy of Bolin’s passing yards came on a fourth period touchdown passed to Gerald Owensby. Two junior halfbacks, Billy MurphyandFred Dalrymple, were the big guns in Lincolnton’s victory. Murphy gained 132 yards and scored three touchdowns and Dalrymple gained 124 yards and scored twice. Murphy scored on runs of two, nine and 33 yards while Dalrymple went home from six and two yards. Lincolnton’s other touchdowns came on a 50-yard run by Randy High. The Wolves also scored a safety when Marty Reid rackled KM’s Marshall Logan In the end zone In the fourth period. Logan scored from three yards out, John Grier scored on a three-yard runand Owensby hauled in the 70-yard TD toss from Bolin for Kings Mountain’s three touchdowns. The victory was Lincolnton’s first over Kings Mountain since 1968 and the win couldn’t have come at a better time. Coupled with Shelby’s 13-12 loss to East Rutherford, it meant second place and a playoff berth for the WoUpack. Lincolnton, which was scored over 200 points in winning its last five games, will be seeking the near-impossible in its own park Friday night against South Point, a club which handed the Wolves a 42-0 shellacking earlier in the season. The Mountaineers will have to sit back and wait until next year when they hope for better days under new head coach Bob Jones.
