KINGS MOUNTAIN MIRROR. WEDNESDAY. MARCH 8. 1972, PAGE 9 / Nancy Roberts’ One Week Run For Governor Daughters For Dad F Daughters of Skipper Bowles were In Kings Mountain last week to boost their father’s campaign for governor. The girls are traveling the state from Manteo to Murphy in a van decorated with campaign parafanalla. Here with Bowles’ Kings Mountain area campaign coordinator, Josh Hinnant, the girls admire a colorful bumper sticker bearing the candidate’s name. Mirror Photo by Rodney Dodson by John KUgo Nancy Roberts is a nice wo man who made the mistake of thinking she could run for Governor of North Carolina and have a reasonable chance of winning. Mrs. Roberts found out the hard way and nowshe’sanex- candidate, at first bitter and cynical, but now calm and matter-of-fact in her recol lection of her one week run at the Governor’s mansion. After refusing to talk with reporters for more than a week, Mrs. Roberts spoke with me about her experience. "I would not have gotten into the race if I didn’t thinkattbe time that I bad a reasonable chance of winning,’,’, she said. "But there were some things about politics that I justdldn’t know. "I had volunteers from all over the state call meandask to work in my campaign. But I know now that you need at least a few political pros in your campai^, people who can direct these volunteers. And all of the so-called pros were already lined up with o- tber candidates. It was very frustrating. Herelhadpeople wanting to work but they didn’t know what to do and I didn’t know what to tell them. It boiled down to a case of too many Indians and not enough chiefs." There was also the problem of money. Mrs. Roberts, a former newspaperwoman, is a writer and a good one. Her husband, Bruce, is a gifted photographer who often fea tures pictures on the national scene. The two of them are currently doing a book and the publisher has set the deadline. Financially, they are average people, and average people don’t run for Governor without help from the big money boys. Mrs. Roberts had spent her own money. Then contribu tions began to come in. She was hesitant to spend some body else’s money when her organization didn’t exactly challenge the Sanford machine lor proficiency. "And my husband was so so lidly behl^ me in this effort," Mrs, Roberts told me, "that he would have sold the bouse if I had needed the money to campaign." Frightened by the bigness of all of this, Mrs. Roberts took another look. She found she had plenty of volunteers but no professicmal to direct them. She needed campaign head quarters in at least four other cities but professional help again was not available. She didn’t want to blow her life’s savings on a political gamble that was at best an extremely longshot. "I also needed someone to schedule me," she said, “and I needed a campagln manager to be very active. The candi dates go through a killing schedule. I was in long enough to see that. People, profes sional people, weren’t avail able. I decided to get out." Mrs. Roberts called a press conference, withdrew and threw her support to Skipper Bowles, although she says she won’t have a great deal of time to be very active In his behalf. She says a Pat Taylor cam paign aide, Jerry Shinn tried to get her to withdraw from the race. Shinn denies that he tried to get her out of the cam paign. Says Mrs. Roberts: "Jerry (Shinn) had a business re lationship with my husband and me. It was not a close friendship. But I will say this. If I had a real opportunity to win, there is no way 1 could have been pressured out of the race by anyone. I started six months too late." She’s taken an inside look at politics that few people ever see. Is she bitter? "No, because I think it can still be done. I find the people are pretty much dissatisfied with the candidates and I’m very interested in the future. I did a lot of work on position papers while I was in the race, I find it’s hard to squelch the enthusiasm that I built up. Maybe I’ll be back in another race at sometime in the fu ture. I’m convinced that it’s not impossible for a woman to win, even in a race for Gov ernor."
