JOHN KILGO Ladles and geatlemeo of tie jury, we are gathered here to day to talk about heroes and the wonderful examples they are setting for our young peo ple. These people are siKurts stars, the ones who get ilielr pictures on the tack of a WheaUes box, a shave with out using water, nd who turn on with a touchdown, not with drugs. First we hear from Charlie Scott, the boy wonder from North Carolina, and the Vir ginia Squires, formerly of Oakland and points West. Mr. Scott was always foodat shooting a^ dribbling a bas ketball. After bis educationat the University, Charlie signed a nice contract vttb the Vir ginia Squire# of Old ABA. He was tappy for a i^e but he says the Squires, for whom he labored so hard, broke Us contract. Scott took a butterfly twirl and a giant step.. .without asking, May I?,. .and jumped to the Pboeolx Sons U NBA, This has upset Mr. Earl Fore man of the VlrglniaSqidresto no end. He tays be will sue Charlie Scott for $I ntlUoa, one Cadillac, and both pairs of his home and away sneak ers. Now we’d like you to meet Rick Barry, a ba^ome lad who shoots a basketball with a touch of class. Mr. Barry came out of the Miami Univer sity to [day basketball for San Francisco of tbe NBA. Mr. Barry soon tired of San Francisco and took a similar job with Oakland, then of the ABA. Maybe we shouldn’t ev en bring up tbe tact that Mr, Earl Foreman, the same gen tleman who is suing Charlie Scott, is the one who per- suadU Barry to leave the NBA tor the ABA. Whea Mr. Foreman moved bis Oakland francbiae to Vir ginia, this displeased Riek Barry and caused alarm in his household. Said Mr. Barry; “I don’t want my non to grow up talk ing like a Southerner saying Y’all come and Ah and things like that.** Barry was then traded to New York, a very nice place to raise children, and at this writing, be was playing with the New York Mets. The heroes go on like the At lantic Ocean. There’sbigJiffl McDaniels of "your Carolina Cougars,’’ and Ctarlle O, Finley of tbe Oakland A’^and Duane Thomas and major lea gue baseball players who are Ureatenlng to strike. Ladles and gentlemen of the jury, as your attorney In this esse, I ask you to find every one guilty. . .the owners, tbe pisfers, and the sportswrl- tera, who strive to make heroes out of ordinary people. And please do not forget tbe wonderful agents who hug a- round star athletes like a buz- aard ever a dead horse. I am aware of the changing society in which we live. But If It’s true that the agony Is only a signal of a better world emerging, wby is greed al ways In the center ring? Brighter Days; Now that the basketball season is over for most college teams, hats oft to Bucky Waters for having guts enough not to turn the coaching el the Duke team over to dissident players,., With Morgaaton tbe site of the Eastern NCAA Regtooals this year, how about Baldhead Is land for 1975. That ought to keep everybody at home. I can’t wait until baseball season. I haven’t been sleep ing well on Saturday after noon. . .I’m not prepared to wager large sums of money on It but I do believe Maryland wUl win tbe NIT. Everyone agrees upon general principles, but no one gets together on details. « « * * An enthusiastic man is one whodiscovers whatmost everyone else has already learned. * * * * People who are not used to hard work And a medium amount of work a terrific strain. * * * * BOX SCORES Jackson--23—High Score BOX SCORES Optomlst 27 Klwanls 24 J.
