Spring Scenery?
Recreation Area Tabled For Study
City Board Adopts Tax Discount Rate
The Kings Mountain Board of Commis
sioners agreed Monday to adopt the same
tax discount rate as the county for the 1972
tax year.
City Clerk Joe McDaniel told the board
that sweeping changes made by the last
legislature in the tax law requires that
the board submit the city’s discount sche
dule to the North Carollm Board d Asses
sments. McDaniel said the city has here
tofore followed the county's discount sche
dule.
Upon recommendation of police chief
Thomas McDevltt, Commissioner Ray
Cline moved that the speed limit be low
ered to 2Sm.p.h. on Phifer Road from Ful
ton Drive to a point 0.23 miles northeast of
Fulton Drive. This Is in front of the high
school, and the speed modification, which
is now 35 m.p.h., was requested by the
Highway Commission. The motion was ap
proved.
The board tabled for study a request of
Phillips Development Company for the city
accept a deed for certain recreational

Social Security
Office To
Change Location
The Gastonia Social Security office will
move Into new quarters on March 31st.
The office now located at 1320 E. Frank
lin Ave., will move to 215 W. Third Ave.,
in Gastonia.
This office serves Gaston, Lincoln,
Cleveland and Rutherford Counties In all
social security matters. Lex G. Barkley,
District Manager, stated that business as
usual will be handled at the present loca
tion through March 30. He added that the
office would be closed to the public on
March 21st while the move is being made.
The office at the new location will be op
en to the public on April 3rd. The tele
phone number, 864-5434, will remain the
same after the move.
Poston To Conduct
Sunday Services

er-Webb College, will deliver the Sunday

Church, 612 Cansler Street. Dr. Poston
will sp^ at 11:00 a.m. In the abMnce of
the pastor. Rev. Frank Shirley who is in
Columbus, Ohio, as the evangelist in revi
val services at the Maize Road Baptist
Church, Rev. Shirley will return to Kings
Mountain for Temple evening service at
7:00 p.m.
The City Clerk outlined to the board the
46 acre area proposed, but no details were
presented of the type of recreation Intend
ed.
Mr. Leroy Blantonwasappointed to fUl a
vacancy on the Redevelopment Commis
sion. The vacancy was left by Charles A-
lexander, and runs through July 1976.
In other business, the city approved for
advertisement of public hearings the fol
lowing properties:
A request to rezone 0.838 acres of land
from R-20 to R-10 by Otto Williams; a re
quest of F, Lloyd Patterson and wife Gene
va G. Patterson to rezone 12 lots of Sec. B,
S. P. Goforth Estate property from R-10
to N. B.; and a request of Phillips Devel
opment Company to rezone Tract 2 of Nor-
thwoods Subdivision from R-20 to R-10.
The mayor pointed out that City Attorney
Jack White was scheduled to brii« to Mon
day’s meeting recommendations regard
ing city street paving which came up dur
ing a recent meeting. The Mayor pointed
out however, that White has been In the
hospital, and no work was able to be com
pleted on the recommendations. The May
or hopes to be able to meet with him short
ly on the recommendation.
Mayor Moss recognized Mrs. Arlene
Barrett and girl scouts of Troop 4 who are
working on their Active Citizenship Chal
lenge project, and were attending the
meeting to see bow their city government

Malicious vandalism, destruction of pro
perty, brealdog and entering and larceny
headline the news this week, as police were
flooded with a variety of complaints.
Seven automobiles were attacked before
5 a.m. at Sadie Mill Saturday. Tags on
the cars were painted black, and the air
was let out of 12 autos.
Wade Tyner
Winner Of
Sales Contest
Mr. A.T. Budden, district sales manager
for Ford Motor Company in Charlotte, an
nounced this week that Wade Ford is the
grand prize winner of a sales contest with
other Ford dealerships.
According to Wade Tyner, owner, the
grand prize is a trip for two to Athens,
Greece and the Greek Isles with first
class transportation, accommodations
and expenses paid for seven days.
The contest, which ran from December
21st thru February 29th, was with other
Ford Dealerships of similar sizes and
sales objectives.
According to Mr. Tyner, sales in the
month of February were almost double
that of any month in the history of the
local dealership. This, according to
Tyner, contributed greatly to the outcome
of the contest.
The contest prize can be taken as is
or can be taken in merchandise.
Mr. Tyner said he would like to express
his appreciation to all the people who pur
chased new Ford automobiles at Wade’s,
and made the trip possible.

The VFW will have a meeting Monday,
April 3rd, at the post tor nomination of
officers. Supper will be served and all
members are urged to attend.

The Royal VUla Motor Inn was entered
through the kitchen between 2-6:15 a.m.
F riday, and the office broken into by go
ing through the ceiling. David Shaw, the
manager reported he left the motel at 2
a.m. No arrest has been made. The theft
netted $399.20.
73 windows were broken out of the Mar-
grace Mill warehouse with rocks, result
ing in $164.25 damage. The de^ruction
was reported on March 23rd by James R.
Van Dyke.
Plato Heavner was really hit hard. Dogs
entered the lot behind bis house killing 13
chickens, 10 rabbits, 3 ducks and 1 guinea.
On the 20th, a plate glass window in Hayes
Wasberette was broken out, resulting in
$125 damage.
Perry Lane Clack, 16, of 709 W. Mount
ain St. was arrested Monday by Lt. David
Corn for breaking—enteri^ and larceny
of the home of Mrs. H. 0. Williams on
Mountain Street. Mrs. Williams was in
the process of moving from the house to
a home on Waco Road when the theft occur
red on March 5th.
Taken was a clock valuedat$150, a pic
ture valued at $75, one at $45, and a set
of brass fireplace tools. Total value of
stolen goods was approximately $250. The
clock was recovered, but damaged. Other
juveniles were reportedly connected with
the theft.
A battery was stolen from Willard Sel
lars of Easley, S. C., the night of March

Another battery was stolen from a car
in the Sadie Mill parking lot on the 23rd.
Chief Thomas McDevltt reported Tues
day that no arrests have been made in the
opening of fire hydrants in the city Sun
day night causing a loss of about 350,000
gallons of water from the city’s storage
tank,
The chief said police found three hydrants
opened apparently by someone using a pipe
wrench.
Lloyd Davis of the Water Department
said be was on duty about 9:15 Sunday
night when he noticed the water pressure
starting to drop.
About 3 feet ofwater was reportedly lost
out of the water tank.
Chief McDevltt reported that the hydrants
opened were within a three or four block
area in a residential section. Accordingto
Davis, this is the fourth time in the past
year that hydrants had been turned on U-
legally.
McDevltt reported that the charge for
opening hydrants when arrests are made
would probably be dainage to property.
The m^mum penalty being two years im
prisonment aixl a court fine based on the
amount of damage.

I Lutheran
I Church Gets
New Pastor
The Reverend Robert E. Allen wUl be in
stalled as the pastor of St. Matthew’sLu-
theran Church, Kings Mountain, April 9
by the Reverend Dr. George L. Whlttecar,
President of the North Carolina Synod of
the Lutheran Church in America. Pastor
alien came to St. Matthew’s frnmSt. Paul
Lutheran Church, Decatur, Georgia after
having served there four years. Prior to
coming to the St. Paul parish, he was the
pastor of Faith Lutheran Church, Savan
nah, Georgia.
A native of Columbia, South Carolina,
Pastor Allen received his Bachelor of Arts
degree in English from Lenoir Rhyne Col
lege, the Bachelor ofDivinlty degree from
the Lutheran Theological Southern Sem
inary, the Master of Theology degree from
Columbia Seminary, and he has also pur
sued advanced work on the doctoral level.
Pastor Allen is married to the former
Nancy Huggins of Hickory, North Carolina.
They have two children, Rachel, 4, and
Timothy, 2.
Scouts Help At
Sunrise Service
Boy Scout Troops #415—American Le
gion, #91 St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church,
and #294 Resurrection Lutheran Church
will be on hand Easter Sunday to help with
the Sunrise Service. The Scouts will give
out bulletins, direct traffic and mix in the
crowd so as to be of any help possible.
Any Scouts from othertroops who wish
to help will also be needed and welcome.

vice will be held in Mountain Rest Ceme
tery on AprU 2 at 6:00 A.M. The service
is sponsored by the Kings Mountain Mlnis-
teriiu Association. The public is invited
to attend the service.
