Property Rezoned For Shopping Center

Goforth estate property facing on Hwy. 74
and Phifer Road.
The announcement came Mondaynlghtat
the City Board of Commissioners meeting,
during which time 12 lots were rezoned
from R-10 to N. B. The rezonlng came
after a public hearing on request of F.
Lloyd Patterson and wife Geneva.
The property, now unused will apparent
ly be the site ofa shopping center, although
Wilson Crawford, whoaddressed the board
Monday said no leases have been signed at
the present time.
‘‘I’ve been trying to buy the property
lor about lour years,” said Crawford,
‘‘they finally agreed to sell.” Although
no leases have been signed, Crawford
said he does have company representat
ives Interested In the site.
The purchase price of the land was not
reveal^ by Crawford, he said only that
Tuesday ‘ ‘we will give Mr. Patterson quite
a check.”
Crawford said he did not request that the
property be zoned general business be
cause he wanted a small shopping center
which would blend better with the commu
nity.
The City forwarded to the Zoning Board
a request of J. 0. Plonk to rezone 9.852
acres of land on East King from L L to
N.B.
Police In
Gunbattle
Police Chief Thomas McDevltt, Captain
Roper and Sgt. Belk were Involved in a
^ shoot-out In Upper Cleveland County Tue
sday when they were called to assist the
Sheriff’s Department when fired upon
while trying to serve an eviction notice on
a Lawndale man.
An all-out gunbattle resulted, a deputy
caught some buckshot, but no one was ser
iously injured. The man was captured.

May Be Site Of Future Shopping Center?
This land, approximately 13 acres, facing on Highway 74,
west of Kings Mountain has been purchased by Wilson Crawford
for future development as a shopping center. The land was re
zoned Monday night by the city for neighborhood business.

Hawkins Attacks “Hypocrisy” In State Government
In a campaign visit to Kings Mountain
last Wedne^y, black Gubernatorial can
didate Dr. Reginald Hawkins spoke out
against hypocrisy In state government.
“I think we’ve lied to each other long
enough,” exclaimed the Charlotte dentist.
He called consumer protection a myth,
said women are discriminated against
worse than blacks, admonished "selling
of liquor on every corner, yet we jail
blacks,” and attacked the limited income
restrictions on retired citizens.

Set For
Local Movie
Public auditions for the movie "Sign-
Off” to be filmed here this Summer by
Four Fellows, Inc. will be held on April
14th and 15th at the Royal VUla Motor
Inn - according to Reb Wiesener, of Kings
Mountain, one of the co-producers of the
fUm.
Wiesener says there are a variety of
parts to be cast, almost 200 to be more
exact. Applicants are requested to bring
a recent Photograph. Wiesener says he
hopes to begin shooting the first scenes
of the fUm on April 22nd at the Fiddlers
Convention at Crossroads Music Park.

Hawkins spoke easily on all aspects of
the campaign, while seated in an arm
chair In the living room, stopping only for
questions.
“I’m the only true reform candidate,”
stated Hawkins, He recommended tax
reform and a change In the state’s fiscal
policies. “I know there’s enough money
now to do what we want as long as our
Interest Is the public Interest. ” He
said there’s enough potential money In
North Carolina to make this one of the
leading states. Hawkins wants to elevate
the per-caplta Income in North Carolina,
by ‘‘bringing in Industry, teaching our
people, and improving our natural re
sources. He pointed out that 35 percent of
college graduates In North Carolina cannot
find jobs.
Hawkins said the first two years of his
administration would be devoted to re
evaluating the tax situation. Hawkins
was asked a counter question sometimes
directed by blacks to his white opponets-
‘‘would you appoint whites to positions in
state government if elected?” Hawkins
answered that he would appoint people who
are qualified, emphasizing that there
would be more blacks, more young people,
plus whites in key positions.
Regarding the state’s upcoming Pre
sidential primary, Hawkins predicted that
George Wallace will carry the state, with
Shirley Chisholm placing second.
Regarding no-lhult insurance, the cand
idate said he hasn’t yet seen a plan that
protects “you”,

KM Water Project Could Be
Completed By Oct. 1st.
In a report to the Kings Mountain Board
of Commissioners Monday night, engineer
W. K. Dickson said work on the Kings
Mountain water project could be completed
by October 1st, providing the land Is avail
able by June 1st so the contractor can be
gin work.
City Attorney Jack White said, “We’re
primarily waiting on the Supreme Court
decision. The land can be acquired If the
legal decision is In our favor.” White said
the decision is expected definitely some
time this month.
City Adopts Emergency
Electrical Plan
The City of Kings Mountain has adopted
an emergency plan for electrical system
operation.
Approval of the plans came during Mon
day night’s lengthy meeting of the City
Board of Commissioners.
The plan states; “In the event it becomes
apparent that demand for energy will ex
ceed the bulk power supply available to
Duke Power Company, the City’s sole sup
plier of electricity, the City In concert
with other Duke customers will sequen-
cially Implement the following emergency
plan In order to avoid a total system shut
down.
Step 1; A general request will be made
through the news media asking all custo
mers to voluntarily curtail their use of
electricity for non-essential purposes. In
addition to this general appeal, special
contact will be made with large commer
cial and industrial customers to request
that they shed non-critical loads.
Step 2; Should additional load reductions
be required, two sixty minute Interrupt
ions on each distribution circuit which
would be programmed over two 5 hour per
iods from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM and 4;00 PM
to 9:00 PM could be put In effect to further
reduce the City’s total load approximately
twenty percent. In connection with this
plan, service to critical loads such as hos
pitals, water pumping stations and com
munication facilities will be maintained
with alternate feeds and transfer switch
ing where practical.”
New Policeman
Appointed
Garland W. Edwards, 22, has been ap
pointed as a member of the Kings Moun
tain Police Department, tilling the posi
tion left vacant by the resignation of offi
cer Jim Belt.
Edwards, a resident of Kings Mountain,
has just completed a four-year tour with
the Marine Corps, serving 19 months In
Vietnam. He is married and has one child.
He attended Compact School and Kings
Mountain High School, and is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. George Edwards.
Pageant Set
For August
The Kings Mountain Jaycees have post
poned the Miss Kings Mountain pageant
until August 26th this year. Pageant
Chairman Richard McKee says more de
tails, Included committee chairman will
be forthcoming.
Debbie Timms, the current Miss Kings
Mountain will be a contestant In the Miss
North Carolina Pageant this Summer.
East Talent Show
Thursday Night
Thursday is the night of the big East
School talent show to be held at 7 p.m. in
the Central School auditorium.
Emcee will be Gerald Thomasson. All
proceeds will go to the East athletic eq
uipment fund. Come out and enjoy the
local talent.
Stop!
On Cansler
The intersection of West Mountain and
Cansler Streets now has a fuU operating
stop light. The light was previously only
a caution light on the Cansler side, but at
the request of some citizens and upon re
commendation of city commissioner Bid-
dlx, who is chairman of the safety com
mittee, the light was put on full stop and
go for a trial period.
Kind Response To
Toney Family
The Kings Mountain Fire Department,
Police Department, and Rescue Squad ex
pressed their appreciation to everyone
who helped In supplying needed articles
to the bmlly of Michael Toney, whose
home was burned last week. A spokesman
for the departments says the home the
family relocated to in Midpines is com
pletely furnished and no more articles are
needed.
