Softball Schedule 1972 NATIONAL LEAGUE Public Doesn’t Care If Baseball Is Played Or Not! y 1 May 4 6-4 1- 5 2- 3 May 11 1-3 4- 2 5- 6 May 8 5- 3 6- 2 1-4 May 15 4-5 1-2 3-6 by JohnKllgo When major league baseball players went on strike, they discovered an overriding bet that must be most disturbing; The American people don’t give a flip if baseball is played in this country or not. I have never seen the sports public so united. Almost to the person, they felt the play ers were acting like a bunch of greedy hut dogs. A .240 bitter can stay in the big leagues for four years and be eligiblefora$245-a-month pension at the tender age of 50. Your neighbor works 45 years for the privilege of re tiring at 65 with Social Secur ity benefits that avera^ about $265 a month. None of this is to say that the owners are guiltless. Charlie Finley has fired eight mana gers in nine years and that ought to tell you something. But in this Instance, the own ers were right and the play ers, urged along by their $50,000 - a - year mouthpiece, Marvin Miller, were dead wrong. There is some good coming out of all of this. The players that you pay money to see are no more “sports” minded than your corner bricklayer. They are union members dri ving the hardest bargain pos sible. The fans don’t even enter in to the picture. How many times have you seen a batter bit a ground ball and walk to first base? The fans booed Reds’ catcher Johnny Bench and he’s per plexed. “Don’t they remem ber wtet I did for them last year?” he asks. Mr. Bench did nothing for the tans. He did it to fatten bis pocketbook. They pay to see him hit If he doesn’t bit, they boo. Wbatd>youdo if the den tist puUs the wrong tooth, ap plaud? The players have proven that baseball is strictly a dollars and cents proposition. They dug the hole. They have revealed their true purpose. They don’t worry about giv ing the fans a show. The fang shouldn’t worry about them, not for a minute. Speaking as one person, I would like to spend an entire summer without major league baseball. I think I could make it just fine. Speaking of strikes, I have more respect for Baltimore linebacker Mike Curtis than I ever bad before. Remember what Curtis did when football players were talking strike? He went to training camp by himself and got ready to play. One Man’s Opinion; The best athlete in America is Jerry West. When the chips are down. West is just a little bet ter than human. He soars to the basket like an eagle going back to its roost. And when be decides to put the ball in the hoop, all the defensive man can do about it is to ask the West Virginian to autograph it. *** When Arnold Palmer dropped L.E.
