Gault said the reason for the change to night racing is to give drivers and mechanics more time to get their cars ready. “We want to give those drivers who have blown en gines or wrecked a chance to get them back in shape for Sunday’s races,” Gault said. “Many drives have had to set out Sunday racing for this very fact.” Such wasn’t the case Sunday as 14 of the area’s top Sport sman were on hand for the main event. CarlSmart of Hi ckory, in a Chevy II grabbed the 1^ on the first lap and led Daniel Warlick, inaChevy n, Freddy Smith, in a Mus tang, Stick Elliott, in a Chevy n a^ Mike Duvall, also in a Chevy n, around the track in that order. J. C. Humphries of Gaffney, after star^ at the rear, pushed his way out front to win the Hobby race. Humphries Suicides among young people reported rising. was followed by Ben Smith of Spartanburg and Doug Cooper of Gastonia. Ail of these, a- long with the ever-popular Jerry Bullock of Gaffney, are expected to be on hand Sunday afternoon. Phillip Eggers of Gaffney, after winning his first race at Carolina, will return along with Eddie Morris, Henry Norman and Gilbert Reynolds. "We’re now getting one of the best fields of Sportsman drivers anywhere,” Gault said. "We’veraisedtbepurse to $s00-$400-$300-$200-$100 in that order right down through the 15th place and this has helped our field. Also, we have the only Sunday races in the area,” he said. Gates will open at 6 p.m., with racing getting underway at 8, The Sportsman heat races will be run first, fol lowed by the Hobby heat. Then the main event will be run ear ly to give those who have to get to bed early a chance to do so. The Hobby and Rookie mains will be run last. Nader aides ask inquiry on Bureau of Drugs. Five teams will make up the league. They are Dicey Mills, W.D, Lee, Oxford Knit, Gastonia Heating and Minette of Grover. No word has been received on the Church League schedule as of yet, however, the league opens on April 17th. Temple Baptist will play Faith Baptist in one of the openers. Macedonia, El Bethel and Temple Baptist should be among the favorites In the lea gue. At this time. It Is stiil hard to even attempt to fore cast a possible winner. Women’s Softball in Kings Mtn, doesn’t look too bright at the present, as three of last year’s team have moved on to the new league in Gastonia. Firestone, Wilson-Perkins and the Trl - Angels of Belmont, have all join^ the new league. Kings Mtn. fans wish them luck as I know we will miss them. *** Rumors are flying real high in the softball circles that the District 33 and Area tourna ments will both be played in Kings Mtn.. Artie never bawls a player out in public and he seems to get his points across to his players very well. I look for this team to surprise a lot of people. Teams around the National League that will be hard to beat are Champion’s No. 2, Craltspun, Duplex and Carolina Throwing. Look for a real tight race in this one before the season end. The following lineup of play ers will represent Craftspun Yarn this season in Indus trial Slow-Pitch Softball lea gue. The team is coached and managed by Gerald Hlpps. Players are; Gary Shields, Leonard Smith, Lefty Muss, Glenn Perkins, Wendell Har vey, Bubbles Pearson, Jerry Ramsey, Dickie Burgess, Pete Burgess, Steve Hicks, Ricky Johnson, Larry John son. ♦»» Switching from softball to baseball, our hats are off to Tommy Pruitt and his Central Jr. High “Patriots”. Tommy has another fine team. They really play an exciting brand of ball. Next week, we hope to furnish some more schedules plus some results from the Church league.
