Maryland’s Tom Mc- MUlen was an unhappy young man when he faUed to make the U.S, Olympic basketball team. Now that McMillen has been named to the squad to replace the quitting Swen Nater of UCLA, he is determined to make good. Tom’s coach. Lefty Dries- ell, told me; "I don’t see how in the world they left Tom off the team in the first place. But in the long run, I thlidc it’ll be good for him. It was the first real setback he ever liad and he’s determined to comeback from it.” Some of the Olympic people told McMillen he wasn’t str ong enough. McMUlen then went to Houston to inquire a- bout a special weight-lifting program to Increase his str ength. "Tom has something to prove now." Driesell says. "If he gets strc.ig, no telling what he could do. I’ve been telling him that he should get a litUe me aner on the court. He doesn’t let people push him around, but he could stand to be a lit Ue more aggressive." By the way, Maryland’s com plete home basketball sche dule for Cole Fieldhouse has been sold out since late June. Driesell has two more weeks of summer basketball camp and then he says he’ll start getting ready for the coming season. One of the counsellors at the Maryland camp wUl be N.C. State super star David Thompson. "I’m gonna watch Thompson like a hawk whUe he’s here," Driesell joked, "to see if I can’t figure out some way to stop him next year.” More on basketball: Acoach at a rival ACC school says that N.C. State’s Tommy Burleson will Improve greatly next se ason, now that he’s made the Olympic basketball team. "If Burleson gets confidence," the coach said, "he’il bepure dynamite." How long will Sammy Snead play golf? "Maybe 'till I’m a hundred,” answers the wor ld’s richest hillbilly....Bob Addle on TV’s biggest mouth; “Howard Cosell, a legend in his own mind...” Reports keep circulating that the Car olina Cougars are trying to lure 6-10 Nate Thurmond a- way from the Golden State Warriors of the rival NBS. Eaves, Larry Pool and Walter Mathis were other favorites here. A special field of hot-running Hobby division cars will be part of this week’s prugiain. BASEBALL * * By Pete Fritchie Washington, D. C. —The American League lost again in the recent All-Star go but Cookie Rajas’ homer should have pulled it out for them. Though the National League is stronger, as claimed, those two infield hits which began the ninth were as much luck as any thing else. They allowed the serior league to tie the game, 3-3. Earl Weaver’s choice of Dave McNally as the Ameri can League's tenth-inning pitcher has become a sus pect choice. McNally, a good pitcher, walked the first hatter—certainly a bush be ginning. and the game was decided. Tug McGraw was a pitch ing standout; Aaron and Morgan were the winners’ stars. -0^ BLUEGRASS-COUNTRY VARIETY SHOW SATURDAY AUG. 12 8 P.M.
