hi PAGE 4, KINGS MOUNTAIN MIRROR, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 1972 Women's EditorJS/yivia Holmes We all make fools of ourselves at some time or another and my time came up last Friday night. It was a fairly normal Friday night that turned into an unusual Friday night when Ray and I got involved with taking some She lby friends to the hospital emergency room after the wife had suffered a slight mishap. It was the emergency room at the Cleveland Memorial Hospital in Shelby which is situated on Gro ver Street. By the time we were ready to leave, it was about 1 a.m. Satur day morning. Ray was acting as chauffeur to our friends and I was following in our car. Ray was driving back to our friends house by an unfamiliar route to me and I was concentrating on keeping his car in view. Of course it was very dark at that time of night and there was very littie traffic on the roads. Suddenly I was aware of a pall of smoke drifting across the hi ghway and a glance to the right revealed a brick buiiding set back off the street and flames were licking up the walls and smoke was pouring forth. Five minutes of driving got us to our destination and once the invatid was safely at home, I asked if anyone else had spotted the fire but no one had. Being unfamiliar with that section of Shelby during hours of darkness I hadn’t the slightest idea of what the building was ex cept that it was on the right handside of Grover Street driving in the direction of Lawndale. I finally decided that I ought to report the fire and did so by telephone even though no one else could verify my fire. We were about to drive homeanyway so we retraced our route in order to check the fire situation and we were just in time to observe two fire trucks departing from the scene. As we slow ly pulled up at the side of the road I saw again the flames and smoke and the truth finally dawned! The brick building was the barbecue pit for Bridges barbecue and the fire was stoked up so well that the flames were extend ing around and above the metai furnace door and licking up the side of tile building. i had turned in a laise, though well-intentioned, fire aiarm!
