\ PAGE 4, KINGS MOUNTAIN MIRROR, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 1, W72 Women*s Editor...Sylvia Holmes I/- V rjf- MBS CHARLENE LOCKRIDGE hxkridge-Anthony Make Wedding Plans Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Gene Lockrldge of Kings Mountain ann ounce the engagement of their daughter, Charlene to Dwalne Morris Anthony. Charlene is a student at Kings Mountain High School. The prospective bridegroom is the son of Mr. Alvin Anthony and the late Mrs. Anthony of Pickens, South Carolina. He is a graduate of Pickens County High School and attended Columbia Commercial College for two years. He is employed by Phil lips Development Company of Kings Mountain. A November wedding is planned. Activity Agenda Planning menus day after day becomes quite a challenge at times and often one wishes that new foods would be Invented in order to provide a little variety. Changing the combinations of foods served at one particular meal sometimes helps and new ways of disguising basic food stuffs also suffices to create a change of flavor. Most cereals, fruits, vegetables, meats and fish remain the same year after year except for changes in packaging or pre sentation. It was quite a pleasant surprise last week to be in troduced to a new fruit. It was really a coincidence because I had read about the fruit Just the day before I saw it in a store. The children were look ing through the latest-edition of "Better Homes and Gardens" when a full page ad caught their eyes. Illustrated inside a dia gram of twelve squares were the twelve f’'ults that went along with ones month of birth. The November people are supposed to appreciate Spanish melons. November is my birthday mon th and I certainly enjoy melon. March people go for oranges and Ray testified to that fact. The children both have July birthdays and were most surnrlsed to find that the fruit under their month was the Kiwi fruit. None of us knew what that was although there was an illustration and a few words telling us that this was a new fruit from New Zealand that tasted liked melon and strawberry. Imagine my surprise when I saw a box of Kiwi fruit in the produce department of .larrls-Teeter the next day. Despite a high price tag-39 cents for one fruit about the size of a peach, I decided to purchase one as a means of satlsfylLj our curios ity. It looked rather like a large lime but was more brown In col or and the skin was fairly tough but rather fuzzy. The inside was bright green-like a dark avacado. There was a central^ lighter, fleshy part surrounded by small black seeds and that was surrounded by a flesh that was like a plum In consistency but very bright green in color. The taste was indescribable and each member of the family had a different reacton as we sampled our fair share (one fourth) of the Kiwi fruit. My first bite had a definite taste of apple plus a strong lemon or citrus flavor. There was also a vague melon flavor. The seedy part was certainly reminiscent of strawberries and the fleshy part was like very sweet grape or plum. Each one of us noticed the familiar flavors-some strong and some weak. It was an interesting taste test. It's good to eat something quite new but at the present price I don’t expect to be buying a dozen Kiwi fruit each week!
