1 PageSB KINGS MOUNTAIN MIRROR Thursday, February 21,1974 TODAY FIUDAY SATURDAY & MONDAY FEB. 2l8t 22nd 23rd and 25th KENNETHLEONARD Leonard Is Named Apex OYM Kenneth Beattie Leonard, son of Mr and Mrs. Black Leonard of Rt. 1, Grover, was recently honored as the Apex .Jaycce’s “Outstanding Young Man of the Year.’’ Known as “Beattie” to local residents, he won the award for his “support of many worthwhile community ac tivities in the city of Apex,” according to the an nouncement letter. He is a member of the Jaycees, serving as vice president, and has been in volved in such projects as the Miss Apex pageant, Christ mas Parade and Fourth of July celebration. Beattie is also a member of the Apex Lions club and has served as chairman of the Apex United Fund Drive, Centennial Bookeeper for the city’s 100th birthday, and has aided in soliciting donations in tile drive for the Apex Com munity Library. Beattie is married to the former Linda Sherrer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bud Sherrer of Kings Mountain. The I-eonards have a son, Kenneth, Jr., four months old. Leonard played American Legion baseball in Kings Mountain in 1963 and is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in business adminstration. He is an officer with Central Carolina Bank and Trust in Apex. Beattie’s father. Black, is a dispatcher with the KMPD and also holds the distinction of being the town of Lillington’s first Young Man of the Year in 1955. Keller, Green Awardees .At the second annual Cleveland County 4-H Achievement Fair 4-H’ers displayed articles that had been made as a part of their project work during the past year. A total of 58 4-H’ers exhibited 265 articles. Points were awarded for each ribbon awarded and a trophy given for the two exhibitors with the highest number of points. Ribbons and trophies were provided by First National Bank of Shelby. Madge Austell of the Number three 4-H club was the recipient of the gold trophy and Lynn Lawing of the Shelby 4 H club was the recipient of the silver trophy. Other awards given were the "1 Dare You Awards” for outstanding leadership to Charles Keller and Margo Green of the Dixon 4-H Club. The Key Award for out standing participation went to Mary Jo Austell of the Number three club and Charles Keller, Margo Green and Trudy Childers of the Dixon 4-H club. The County Council officers for the coming year were installed as follows: President-Sharon Withrow, Eskridge Grove 4-H Club; Vice-President-Charles Keller, Dixon 4-H Club; Secretary-Treasurer-Kevin Bridges, Dixon 4-H Club; Reporter-Margo Green, Dixon 4-H Club and Pianist-Lynn I.awing, Shelby 4-H Club. iili 4;'': 1 - 2-Pc.
