Page 4B KINGS MOUNTAIN MIRROR Thuraday, AprU 4, ltT4 Fiber Honors Local 4-H Poster Winners Three students in the Kings Mountain District School system were presented awards Monday at a luncheon held at the Fiber Industry Recreation Cwter. The students were winners in a popter contest sponsored by the 4-H Department of the County Extension Service and the Shelby Plant of Fiber Industries, Inc. Billy Gene McCarter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Mc Carter of 801 Crescent Circle, won first place in the junior high category including grades 7 through 9. Also winning in the junior high category was second placer Larry Hord, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe L. Hord of 704 Jackson St. In the high school division, Charles (Chuck) Keller, son of Mr. and Mrs. R.C. Hawks of Rt. 4, Kings Mountain, copped a second place berth. First place winners were awarded a $50 saving bond, second place winners received a $75 and third (Jaoe wirncrs^ were awardea 410 in a starter savings account. The nine winners in the three categories were treated to the luncheon Monday and were awarded their prizes by Fiber Plant Manager, Gene LeGrand. Assisting LeGrand and offering remarks on the posters was Assistant Ex tension Agent James M. Pitman, who also handled details of the contest and Coming or going? Pitman noted 450 pasters had been submitted from the students throughout the county school system and the judging had been "tough.” ’Theassistant Extension Agent said the poster contest was one phase of a three-part effort to promote concern for energy conservation. The other phases, he noted, were seminars held for students to attend and learn efforts of conservation to take back to the schools and regular' programs in the community 4- H clubs to teach conservation. Fiber Plant Manager Gene LeGrand expressed his pleasure with the efforts of the contestants and winners and pointed out that the young people “might be the future scientist who finds a new power source for this coun try.” Ms. Betty Hawkins, who represented Duke Power, said the posters will be on display at the Duke Power offices as well as in the Fiber Plant. Pitman said he also expected various merchants in Shelby to dis|day the posters. ' Dr. Philip Padgett took the floor following the service to begin the tribute. “He has been a tremendous influence on the spiritual life of our church,” he began, “He was dedicated to the job of clerk of the session for 42 yeiu:s.” 'Thomson has been a member of First Presbyterian since 1923. ’Thomson also served for eight years on the board of regents at Barium Springs Orphanage from 1937 until 1945. He served Kings Mountain as mayor from 1941 until 1947. He now so'ves as treasurer fur Neisler Brothers, Inc. of Kings Mountain. To conclude the tribute Dr. Paul Ausley, pastor, presented ’Thomson with a Bible inscribed in his honor. Less than one year after joining the church ’Thomson was elected to the board of deacons and was later treasurer for benevolent causes until he was elected an Elder Dec. 16, 1928. He was elected clerk of the session May 17, 1931 and served until Dec. 31, 1973. He was elected treasurer of the building fund for the church, which is located at 111 E. King St. ’The church was dedicated Dec. 5, 1937. ’The church was partially destroyed by fire in 1947 and ’Thomson was elected treasurer to handle funds for repairs. March Busy For KM Rescue bring your prescription to PRESCRIPTION PHARMACY The Kings Mountain Rescue Squad answered a total of 124 calls during the month of March and that represented 2,396 miles travelled and 685 man-hours on duty.
