C. Moimties Defeat NG Kings Mountain's Moun taineers gave probably thdi best overall effort of the season here Monday ir defeating North Gaston 7-4 in a Southwestern Conference Division One baseball game. The Mountaineers had their best day at the plate, collecting nine hits oS North Gaston righthander, Tim Rhinehart, and received good pitching themselves from righthanders Chuck Austin and Kenny Farias. Richard Gillespie, making his first start in rightfield, and Jimmy Fitts sparked the Mountaineers at the plate with a pair of hits each. Gillespie had a single and two-run homer to drive in three nns and Fitts had a single and triple to plate a pair of runs. Austin pitched well despite a painful mouth injury suffered in practice last Friday. He lost a couple of teeth when hit with a baseball as the Moun taineers practiced in the KMHS gym. The junior worked on a no- hitter for three and one-third innings and finished with a seven-hitter. Four of North Gaston's hits came in the fifth inning when they scored three runs off Austin to cut the Mountaineer lead to 5-4. Austin had to have relief help from Farias in the seventh. The senior righthander came on with two men on base and nobody out and quickly worked a double play and strikeout to end the game. Austin scored the winning run in the first inning when he singled with two away, stole second and scored on a single by Fitts. Fitts scored on a single by Gillespie to make it 2<t. North Gaston picked up an Kiearned run in the second to make it 2-1, then KM put the game out of reach with three in the third. Gillespie produced a pair with his long homer over the centerfidd fence and the Mounties added another on a walk to Monte Falls, single by Hal Glass and a North Gaston error. A couple of misjudged balls by the Mountaineer defense helped the Wildcats score their three runs in the fifth but KMHS added a pair of in surance runs in the sixth to nail down their third Division One win in five outings. Steve Southwell singled and scored un a triple by Fitts and Fitts later scored on an error. RICHARD GILLESPIE ...Two-run homer BOXSCORE N.
