Page 1«B KINGS MOUNTAIN MIRPIR Thursday, April 18,1874 Photo by Gary Stewart LAZY DAYS - Spring is here-although the weather the first of this week didn't show it-and it’s time for soaking in the sunshine. Mirror photographer Gary Stewart caught his cat napping under a tree on one of our warm days. Fire Facts By Bill Herndon (EDITOR’S NOTE: Bill Herndon is fire prevention officer of the Kings Mountain Fire Department and his duties cover every facet of fire prevention in the home, industry and in- viroiunent,) Despite efforts to prevent fire, it sometimes does strike, and every family should have a plan of action for saving lives and prt^erty. All members of the family should help plan and become familiar with the fire emergency plan. (1) Each member (rf the family should be familiar with two possible routes to the ground from every room in the house. Special emphasis should be placed on safe exits from bedrooms. Ladders may be necessary from second floor rooms. (2) Develope a method whereby each member of the family can be aroused quickly. (3) Designate a meeting place for all members of the family so they can be accounted forafter leaving a burning building. (4) See that all screens and windows can be easily opened or removed. Everyone should un derstand that windows can be broken if necessary to provide a quick safe exit. Articles such as chairs or heavy toys should be identified as suitable for breaking glass. Ways to avoid cuts should be pointed out. (5) Each member of the family should be warned to make a simple test if he is in a closed room and smells smoke. Before opening the door, he should place the back of his hand against the dow. If the door feels hot, the hallway is already filled with deadly gases. Keep the door closed and use another escape route. (6) Have periodic fire drills. (7) As soon as everycme is outside the house, call the fire department. Your plan should include an alternate means of calling for help in case you cannot reach a telephone in your house. Kings Mountain Fire Department phone numbers are 739-2551 and 739-2552.
