KIM LACKEY FOUR YEARS OLD - Kim Lackey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Lackey, Rt. I, Shelby, will celebrate her fourth birthday Sat., Apr. 27. Grandparents are ,Mr. and •Mrs. High Lackey, Rt. 1, Shelby and Mr. and .Mrs. Bill Powell of Cherryvllle. By TO.M McIntyre Editor. Die Mirror Duplex International of Kings Mountain, manufacturers of fabric used in wymen’s dresses and sportswear, puts a great deal of faith in a woman named Elizabeth Gabor. And the faith must be justified because Mrs. Gabor has been with Duplex, a division of Reeves Brothers, for the past six years. What exactly does the Hungarian from Great , .yeck, N.Y. do for her employer? She is a consultant stylist. ‘“Diat’soneof thetitlesi answer to,” she told The Mirror this week. Relaxing in a vacant office at the Kings Mountain plant Mrs. Gabor said one of the jobs she does for Duplex “is the design-of color trends for the fabrics the company manfactures.” Bin the job is more. She spends two or three days each week at the Kings Mountain operation through six months of the year and makes trips to Europe about twice each year. In her tours abroad she determines the coming trends in colors, fabrics and fabric weight to be utilized in the newest styles in women's fashions. Her reports are turned in and based on her judgement and the corporate facilities her company gears its fabric output to fit these • trends. “I just returned from Europe,” she said. “I made the fashion shows in Italy, Spain, Switzerland and Paris and it looks as if the ladies will be wearing more fashions than ever before made of knit fabrics. “At the same time I don’t believe American women are going to really adopt the newest designs,” she continued, “because the dresses are going longer for the coming season. There is a very good reason for this in Europe because there they were hurt more by the fuel crisis than here. The longer fashions there will also serve to keep the women warm.” She said the fashions really look great, but she can’t see American women wearing such long fashions for everyday living in America. In her trips to Europe Mrs. Gabor also visits firms that manufacture machines for fabric manufacturing to see if there is something new Duplex might be able to utilize in America. Looking at the fashions in America today one wanders if the European designs still have as great an influence on the fashions here. According to Mrs. Gabor “There is still a great deal of influence. “But at the same time the American fashions, in some cases, have just as great an effect on the European designs,” she con tinued. “Take, for instance, the current craze for jeans. A pair of jeans in Europe usually costs as much as $50.” She said the jeans are manufactured in Europe, buL she recalled, “I saw a load arrive at one shop in Paris and the jeans were wet. Washed before being sold. The manufacturers also pour in bleach to make them fade. They want them to have that already been worn look. That’s what the Euriyiean buying public wants.” She said she has found “even though we are told the Europeans look down on America these days, it is also true they have great respect for us when they look at the way we manage. Almost everywhere in Europe their ways of life are in a state of collapse.” Elizabeth Gabor was bom in Hungary (and no, she is no relation to Zsa Zsa and Eva. Gabor, in Hungary, is as common a name as Smith or Jones here). Her family was in fashion and fabric designing, in a small way, and she naturally went into the business. “I studied in Hungary, Switzerland and Paris,” she said. “But I never really thought I would use my training to any great degree. I didn’t like it that much back then. When I got married I just knew I would never get involved again.” But 15 years ago shedid. She worked through a succession of fabric manufacturers as a designer until she came to Duplex. “This is the longest I every stayed at any one place,” she said. “They seem happy with me and I am very happy with them. I find the people with Digilex to be marvelous, wonderful people. Like a close knit family, really.” Mrs. Gabor is about to leave for Europe again for Duplex and this time readers of The Mirror will benefit also from her trip. In the coming weeks The Mirror will publish articles by Mrs. Gabor written espedaliy for Kings Mountians. The articles will cover the fashion world and she will be “our women in New York, Paris, Spain, Italy or whereever” there is fashion news. Through Mrs. Gabor’s eyes Mirror readers will preview the coming styles and get a first hand report of what they can expect to be wearing in style, fabric and color in the coming months.
