Page 2A—MIRROR-HERALD—Thursday, May 22, 1975 Area Deaths And Funerals MRS. MARTIN Mrs. Judy Clark Martin, 22, of 1008 Linwood Dr., wife of Ptl. Harry Martin of the Kings Mountain Police D^artment, was killed instantly Monday morning about 7 a. m. when her car was struck by a south bound Southern Railway freight engine at the Indus trial Park Railroad Crossing. Chief of Police William Rop er said Mrs. Martin was en- route to work at Kinmont Industries. Impact, said Roper, threw the car about 50 feet along the railroad tracks. Mrs. Martin was alone in the car. Her husband had just re turned to their home from his third shift duty at KMPD, said the Chief, when officers notified him of his wife’s death. Mrs. Martin is Gaston Coun ty’s seventh traffic fatality of 1975. George Kelly of Greenville, S. C., engineer, told State Trooper Charles Cook that Mrs. Martin had pulled par tially onto the tracks and stopped her vehicle. The offi cer said a witness told him that Mrs. Martin pulled her car up to the crossing and stopp^ but that the frcmt of her car was protruding onto the tracks, causing the right front part of the engine to hit the left front of her car. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 4 p. m. from Grover’s First Baptist Church of which she was a member, interment following in Grover Cemetery. Rev. James Leigh and Rev. George Leigh offi ciated at the rites. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William G. Clark of Grover; three brothers, Wil liam Jerry Clark of Patterson Springs, Danny Steve Clark of Grover and Gary Dean Clark of Kings Mountain; two sis ters, Mrs. James Anderson of Kings Mountain and Mrs. Tal- madge Wright of Grover; and one half-brother, Vance Dale Head of Grover. They commended; the Board of Education for con tinuing efforts to improve physical plants and the educa tional programs of the sys tem; the Cleveland County Commissioners for their sup port of education; the legisla tive delegation for their ef forts in support of educational matters; Supt. Donald Jones for his contribution to educa tion during the past year; principals and all administra tors for contribution to educa tion during the past year; appreciation to leaders of professional organizations who give their time to serve in leadership positions; and the Shelby Daily Star and Kings Mountain Mirror-Herald for their favorable coverage of education in this area. BUFORD PHILBECK Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Plonk Lovell, 72, vet eran sales clerk at Plonk Brothers Department Store and Kings Mountain native, were conducted Tuesday morning at 11 o’clock from Resurrection Lutheran Church of which she was a member. Her pastor. Rev. Glenn Bo land officiated at the rites, and interment was in St. Luke’s Church Cemetery. Surviving are one brother, William L. Plonk of Kings Mountain, and one sister. Miss Lillian Plonk of Asheville. Mrs. Lovell, in apparent good health, became ill sud denly a week ago and died suddenly Sunday night in Cleveland Memorial Hospital Funeral rites for Buford Alexander Philbeck, 43, of Rt. 1, Grover, were conducted Friday at 3 p. m. from Clear- view Baptist Church of Grover interment following in Moun tain Rest Cemetery. Owner and operator of Philbeck’s Used Cars, he died Thursday morning in Cleveland Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Cleve land County, son of Mrs. Madge Milton Philbeck of Patterson Springs and the late Arnold Philbeck. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Mrs. Mattie Porter Philbeck; one son, Jerry Dean Philbeck of Shelby; two daughters, Mrs. Linda P. Emory and Mrs. Karen P. Williams, both of Shelby; one stepson, Monroe Porter of Shelby; four step daughters, Mrs. Patricia Oaks and Mrs. Janice Short, both of Shelby, Mrs. Frances Clark of Baltimore, Md., and Mrs. Carolyn Philbeck of Grover; four brothers, J. C. James, Gene and G. C. Philbeck of Patterson Springs; two sis ters, Mrs. Doris Sanders and Mrs. Gertrude Knox of Grov- eer; and 16 grandchildren. Palmer Mortuary was in charge of arrangements. W. R. BUTLER He was employed as a cook and was a veteran of World War 11. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are four sons, BUly Butler of Baltimore, Md., Ricky, Ronnie and Terry But ler, all of Durham; one brother, Floyd Butler of Shel by; three sisters, Mrs. Wilma Poteat and Mrs. Nan Roberts of Kings Mountain and Mrs. Eva Rankin of Charlotte. MRS. HUMPHRIES Mrs. Humphries died Satur day afternoon at 5 p. m. in Kings Mountain Hospital after illness of three weeks. She was a native of Cleve land County, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Cicero Ledford and a member of Temple Baptist Church. BESSEMER CITY Funeral rites for William Rob ert Butler, 49, who died Wednesday, were conducted Friday morning at 11 o’clock from Sisk East Chapel, inter ment following in Bessemer City Memorial Cemetery. A native of Shelby, he was the son of Mrs. Viola Jenkins Butler of Bessemer City and the late Albert W. Butler. Surviving are three sons, Dwight Humjiiries of Gaff ney, S. C., Herbert Humphries of Monroe and Ferris C. Hum phries of Charlotte; three daughters, Mrs. Jack Hughes of Kings Mountain, Mrs. Owen Holmes of Newberry, S. C. and Mrs. W. C. Robert Lee Smith, 58, of Carpet Lane, died Saturday at 11:30 a. m. A member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, he had been employed by Dr. Paul Hen dricks for 27 years.
