SEPT. 8 A native of Kings Mountain, Johnnie Caldwell has been a member of the Kings Mountain Rescue Squad for the past five years. Currently he serves the squad as secretary. He is also captain of the rescueteam assigned to the city fire department. Educated in the local schools and at UNGCharlotte, Caldwell is employed at the post office in Bessemer City. HeisthesonofMr. andMrs. John H. Caldwell, Rt 2, Kings Mountain, and is married to the former Diane Baity. They have three children, Eddie, 9, Kim 7, and John-Boy, 21 months. They reside at 304 Somerset Dr. “I joined the rescue squad after Bob Hope got me to attend a meeting,” CaldweUsaid. “I enjoyed the work then and I stiU do now. Just the fact of helping people makes it all worthwhUe. There’s no money, just pleasure you feel inside. “It would be difficult to estimate the number of hours I have spent in training courses for the squad, but pres ently, I am taking the Emergency Medical Technician course and just completed a course on firefighting and rescue procedure for the fire department.’” On Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from 10 p. m. until six a. m., Caldwell is on phone duty for the squad, then on his day off from work he usually makes himself available to the squad. “It gets into your blood,” he said. Feet will be strolling and wheels will be rolling on Sept. 20 from 9 a. m.-5 p. m. for the 1975 Cleveland County Hike- Bike. The annual event is being sponsored by the Cleveland County Mental Health Center and the Shelby Civitans with all proceeds going towards projects for the county’s men tally retarded. This year’s Hike-Bike will feature three routes in the county. One for the western portion of the county and the Boiling Springs area will cover 25 miles. The eastern route will go through the Grover and Kings Mountain area, by the Woodbridge vicinity and back into Shelby, a total of 49 miles. A third route covering eight miles has been set up for the city of Shelby. The western route and the Shelby route will begin at the city park with the eastern route beginning across from K-Mart at the Holly Oak Park Entrance. Riders and walkers will be covering the routes for pledges from sponsors. The bikers and hikers will be al lowed to begin at any of sev eral check points (City Park, across from K-Mart, Wood- bridge Country Club and Kings Mountain High School) along the routes and may cover all or only a portion of the mileage. Pledge and sponsor forms are available at the Mental Health Center at 808 Washing ton St. or at the Consumer Loan office of First National Bank. Students may pick up the forms at their schools. A committee representing the Mental Health Center and the Civitans has set a $5,000 goal for this year’s project. The committee will also award trophies to the top bikers and hikers in several categories. The winners will be determined on a point basis with one point awarded for each mile covered and one point awarded for each dollar raised for the project. Refreshments, compliments of McDonald’s (at the City Park), will be served to the walkers and riders at the check points and safety checks will be made for the bikers. In case of rain the Hike-Bike will be held on Sept. 27. VANDALISM KMPD reported that some time Sunday night vandals damaged the door to the pas tor’s study and made entry to Second Baptist Church.
