ADK Chapter Met Monday The October meeting of North Carolina Beta Chi Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa featured the commemoration of the 28th anniversary of Alpha Delta Kappa, Interna tional Honorary Sorority for Women Educators founded in Missouri in 1947 by Mrs. Marion Southall, Mrs. Hattie Poppino and Mrs. Marie Neal. In 1955 Alpha Delta Kappa was made international with authorization to establish chapters in other countries. IVfrs. Howard Bryant was hostess to 18 members at her home (»i Crescent Circle. Miss Jackie Blanton and Mrs. Eu gene McCarter assisted the hostess in serving lemon tarts, cheese straws and tea on arri val of members. One of the main objectives of Alpha Delta Kappa is to promote educational and charitable projects and activi ties. The Kings Mountain Chapter has been involved in this type of activity since its organization. The outstanding continuing project of the group has been establishment of a scholarship which is awarded annually to a graduating senior at the Kings Mountain High School who plans to enter the educa tional profession.. The $200 scholarship has been given three times. Other recent activities in clude gifts, visits, and pro grams for area nursing homes, contributions to the Boys Home at Lake Wacca- maw, and gift subscriptions for childrens’ magazines to the Kings Mountain Hospital for the young patients there. Money for the projects comes from the annual flea market and bake sale sponsored by the chapter. The purpose of ADK are to give recognition to teachers who have proved themselves to be strong, efficient, profes sional teachers; to build a fra ternal fellowship which will be valuable professionally and socially; to promote high standards of education and to assist in strengthening the status of the teaching profes sion; to sponsor scholarships and altruistic frograms and to cooperate with worthy com munity projects. Alpha Delta Kappa has grown steadily and now has 1,593 diapters, with chapters in every state including the District of Columbia, Alaska, and Hawaii — in Canada, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Eng land, Argentina and Mexico, Kansas City, Mo., is interna tional headquarters. Alpha Chapter, chartered in Charlotte April 3,1954, was the first in North Carolina. Gretta Kistler was state chairman from 1954-56. Sigma Chapter, chartered in Shelby Dec. 8, 1958, was the first in Cleveland County. In 1971 International granted permission to estab lish a chapter in Kings Moun tain, thus, Beta Chi was chart ered Nov. 4, 1971. Mrs. Edith Bridges served as first presi dent. Mrs. Carolyn Fin er is currently president. Takes Part In Rescue Mission Coast Guard Machinery Technician First Class David R. Wallace Jr., son of Mrs. Ida W. Wallace of Rt. 1, Bessemer City, recently participated in a rescue mission aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Courageous, homeported at Cape Canaveral, Fla. He and his shipmates were notified by the Rescue Coordination Center, Miami, that a small private Airplane had been forced to ditch off the coast of Freeport in the Bahama Islands. The Courageous assumed the responsibilities of on-scene commander, coordinating the efforts of Coast Guard aircraft and numerous private pdanes and vessels to locate survivors of the crash. After three hours, passeng ers from the downed aircraft were spotted in the water and picked up by a helicopter, which has been dispatched by the Courageous. All of the passengers had escaped from the crashed airplane, which has sunk imm^iately, and there were no serious injuries. Bioen Choir Meets Sunday The Kings Mountain Bicen- ta^nial Choir will meet Sun day at 4 p. m. at First Baptist Church fellowship hall. Enrollment closes after this meeting. A Christmas Concert will be given Sunday, Dec. 7 in the B. N. Barnes au^torium.
