Mountaineers Host Lions
In Must Game For Both

(ay bring a 3-2 conference
(Cord and 3-3 overall slate
jo the contest, while the
(ountaineers are 2-2-1 in the
jague and 3-2-1 overall.
Shelby’s three losses have
een to three powerhouses —
lunterHuss, South Point and
luns - so the Golden Lions
rill rate as heavy favorites to
rin Friday. KM’s two losses
ave been to strong teams —
liase and East Rutherford —
lit their victories came
gainst three teams (Hudson,
®emer City and East Gas-
u) which have a combined
lal of only three wins.
It’s a must game for both
in that a loss would
BOB JONES
probably eliminate Shelby’s
chances of returning to the
playoffs. And, a loss would
almost assuredly mean a
losing season for the Moun
taineers, who still have to play
South Point, Cherryville and
Bums.
The game does give KMHS
coach Bobby Jones an op
portunity to even his coaching
record against his former high
school coach, Gerald Allen. In
four previous meetings, the
Lions have won two games
and the Mountaineers one with
one tie.
“Shelby’s personnel is
probably as good as anybody
we’ll play,’’ says Jones.
“They’re having trouble get
ting it together this year but
they have basically the same
team that went to &e associa
tion finals last year.”
Jones pointed out that
Shelby’s three losses were all
by a touchdown or less. “They
could have won any of them,”
he says.
Jones has not been pleased
with his team’s play this fall,
even though the Mountaineers
have managed to keep their
record on the winning side.
“We’re going to have to play
better than we’ve played at
any time this year if we expect
to win Friday night,” he said.
“We can’t stand around and
watch like we’ve been doing.
“We’re just now getting into
the tough part of our sched
ule,” he wait on, “and we’re
going to have to get some
leadership if we expect to win
any more ballgames. Every
body is going to have to start
playing the best they can.”
Jones said he doesn’t plan
anything special for the Lions,
who have a strong running at
tack and their usual tough de
fense.
“We’re just going to try to
do what we’ve been doing,
only a lot better,” he says. ‘
We’re going to have to get our
players enthused or we’re not
going to be able to stay in the
same park with Shelby.”
Jones has called up the en
tire jayvee team because of
the lack of depth on the varsity
and said many of the players
will be seeing action during
the remainder ,of the season.
Jones said Chris Johnson,
last week’s leading msher
with 90 yards, will probably be
moved back to splitend this
week, indicating the Moun
taineers mi^t fill the air with
passes. Jones said Richard
Ross will probably move in at
tailback.
The Mountaineers stay at
home next week for a biggie
with South Point, the only
team KMHS has not defeated
in Jones’ five years as head
coach. KM’s on the road for its
final two against (lierryville
and Burns.

STEVE’S OPTION — Kings Mountain quarterback Steve

An old football saying states
that when you put the football
in the air, three things can
happen and two of them are
bad.
That, of course, means that
the bad things that could
happen would be an incomple
tion or an interception. The

good thing, of course, is a
completion.
Kings Mountain’s talented
junior quarterback, Mike
Bumgarner, put the football in
the air 18 times last Friday
night at East Gaston and bad
things happened an even
dozen times. He had five
passes intercepted and seven
others fell incomplete.
But Bumgarner was true on
six attempts — in.cluding one
22-yarder to Chris Johnson
with just 36 seconds left in the
game — as the Mountaineers
hiked their record to 3-2-1 with
an 18-14 Southwestern Con
ference victory over the War
riors.
Bumgarner tossed one other
touchdown pass — a 22-yarder
to William Thompson in the
third quarter — giving him six
TD passes for the year. He
now has 567 yards passing in
six games, ranking him sec
ond in the SWC behind Bums’
All-State candidate, Steve
Gardner.
Bumgarner’s two touch
down tosses capped a come
back bid by the highly favored
Mountaineers which started
late in the first half when the
underdog Warriors moved
ahead 14-6 on Grant Hoff
man’s 40-yard touchdown run.
It was an error-filled night
for both clubs as between
them they committed 12 turn
overs, including eight pass
interceptions and four lost
fumbles.
“Wewere very disappointed
in our play,” noted KMHS
Coach Bobby Jones. “We’re
not playing with any en
thusiasm and we’re not
playing aggressively.”
Jones praised the play of
Johnson, who was the game’s
leading rusher with 90 yards
and who intercepted three,
East Gaston passes in addition
to scoring the winning touch
down. Jones said he was also
highly pleased with the
blocking of tackle Mark
Moore.
