Race fans In the Charlotte area are better- located for following NASCAR Grand National Racing than anywhere in the country. Three ON tracks, Charlotte Motor Speed way, Rockingham’s North Osrollna Motor Speedway and North W..kesboro Speedway are all located in North Carolina and Darlington, Martinsville and Bristol are Just a Sunday morning drive away. During the summer months, however, there is no ON action in the area, 'the last race at one of the afore mentioned tracks was the May 27 World 600 at CMS and the next one will be the Volunteer 600 at Bristol on Aug. 26. Charlotte area fans aren't left without a race to go to during this two- month span however as Metrolina Speedway, located Just north of Charlotte on Highway 21, is the site of 120 laps of stock car racing every Friday night. A 40-lap Late Model Sportsman feature headlines the card at Metrolina with a 80-lap Seml-Modlhed main event and a 10-lap Street Division chase also on the program. Two, 10-lap qualifying heats determine the starting grid for the LMS and SM competitors. Top contenders each week In the LMS division Include Freddie Smith of Kings Mountain, Carl Smart, Hayward Plyler, David Perry, Benny aonts, Mike Duvall, Charlie Blanton, Joe Frasaon, Stick BUlott and Billy Scott. Oates open at 6 p.m. Friday with action getting underway on the half-mile clay oval at 8 p.m. Grid Physicals Set August 1 Kings Mountain High School football prospects are reminded that physical examinations will be given at the John Gamble Stadium fleldhouse August 1 at 7 p.m. ^ persons planning to play footbalTthls fall must have a physical. Head Coach Dan Brooks said iM-e-season practice will begin on August 2 at 7:80 a.m. Players will spend a week of con ditioning drills before beginning heavy practice. The Mountaineers, hoping to Improve on last year’s 6-6 record, open their Southwestern S-A Conference season on Frl., Sept. 7 against Bums. Artis Gilmore Star Of The Stars Youngsters attending the second annual Kings Mountain Basketball Chmp of the Stars will be able to make a claim no others In the world can. Ihey’ll be the only persons anywhere receiving In dividual Instruction from NBA superstar Artis Gilmore. Gilmore, the 7-4 center of the Chicago Bulls, doesn’t work any other bsmketball camp. "I do this for George Adams,” said Gilmore, a former teammate of Adams' at nearby Gard- ner-Webb College, where both gained All-American recognition. Adams Is now athletic director of the City Parks and Recreation Department and director of the basketball csunp. ”It’s not that I don’t like working camps,” con tinued Gilmore. ”I love It. I’d love to set up some camps of my own. But to have a successful camp you have to go out on foot during the winter and get everything lined up, sind I Just don’t have a chance to do that.” Gilmore will be the star attraction at the KM camp which will feature some of the top players and coaches of any camp In the area. In addition to Gilmore and Adams, counselors will Include former Wake Forest All-American Tony Byers, Duke assistant coach Terry Chill, Gard- ner-Webb All-American Lewis Young, pro player Steve Peeler of the Belgium Nationals, Kings Mountain Junior High coaches Ken Napier and Danny McDowell, Kings Mountain High coach John Blalock and Shelby High standout John Toms. Boys ages 8-18 are eligible to attend the camp, vriilch will run July 80 through August 8.
