But with a small amount of time and Investment these ponds can be turned Into an economical source of food. Management of your pond will contribute most to the success or failure of your pond. After a pond has been satisfactorily completed, proper stocking is an essential component to provide a balanced population. Bsuis and bream are the basic combination of fish used to stock ponds. However, redesLT sunflsh and channel catfish may be used in combination with bass cuid bream. Always wait until baas have spawned one time before beginning to fish the pond. A good fertilization program Is also essential to Increase the amount of dny plants and minute animals (plankton) that live In the water. Plankton Is eaten by bass and bream. Bream are then eaten by bass. Weeds may be controlled by deepening the edges to at least 2 to 8 feet. This will provide adequate depth to shade the pond bottom when the pond Is properly fertilized. Draining the pond In winter will also help. FTsh kills often occur during changeable weather conditions. They can also be caused by over population, silt In pond, agricultural chemicals, especially pesticides. A depleted oxygen supply may be the most common problem. If this occurs, chum the water with sm out board motor, use an Irrigation pump to recycle the water, or add super phosphate (0-20-0).
