EXOTIC PHEASANTS ARE PHILBECK’S pheasant, one of several birds nearing extlnctlTO
HOBBY-Charles Phllbeck, above, Burlington Mill and native of Ireland. Phllbeck has a flock of more
fixer, shows off his 17-year old Reeves male than 100 of these beauties at his home.
^ ^He’s Gone To The Birds?’
■ ^ Charles Phllbeck, card fixer
At Burlington’s Phenlx plant In
C ngs Mountain, had a lot of fun
owing bantam chickens when
“ he was a boy. A stint In the ar-
■ jned services during World War
:: tl broadened his horizons, and
his Interest In growing exotic
birds—pheasants.
When Phllbeck says
"pheasants” he’s not talking
about the run of the mill, ring-
^^eck pheasant famlllau' to the
^American scene.
He’s talking of something
requite different birds from far
-.jiway places, with brilliant hues
'.and considerable prestige In the
£:.game bird kingdom.
5; At his home In Cherryvllle,
Sphiibeck hM a flock of over 100
:;^heasants, several varieties of
^whlch are nearly extinct; the
*Blue Ear from Korea: the
^rjswlnho, a North American
;::>reed: the Dark Throat Gold
y'from Africa; the Lady Amhurst,
;::;also a North American variety,
i*:; Kings of the roost, so to speak,
:is a Reeves male which Is one of
'the first birds Phllbeck acquired
years ago. A native of
^Ireland, he’s still vigorous and
^productive.
Phllbeck has a wealth of
pheasant know-how—all learned
by experience rather than from
books:
Birds like cool weather and
this Ume of year they’re In their
prime of color. Up until they
begin to lay. pheasant hens’ tails
are short; once they start
laying, their tails get longer.
Pheasant living conditions make
a big difference. Pine shavings
in their pens keep down mites
and other Insects; creek sand
beneath the shavings Is changed
at least twice a year. A diet of
milo, oats, wheat Euid com
mercial wild game food Is
universally accepted by the
birds. An occasional drop or two
of clorox In their drinking water
keeps them toned up.
”I never show them In public
events,” Phllbeck points out,
noting that the risk of disease is
too high. ’’But I’ll show them to
anybody who wants to see them.
School kids are coming over all
the time. And when I’m off
work, 9 times out of 10 you’ll find
me down there talking to them.
And my grandson will get in a
cage and stay for an hour or
more, just sort of visiting with
the birds.”
"The male birds have brilliant
plumage. "When you have a

group of males together by
themselves, everything Is all
right. But you Introduce the hen,
and they’ll fight to the death for
possession,” Phllbeck said. For
this reason a male and two hens
are usually penned together.
"You can tell by their action If
they’re ailing,” he adds. "Foot
trouble Is the most common...an
ailment they call ’mud crack.’
’They’ll die if It’s not corrected,
so I learned by trial and error
that washing their feet with
clorox, then rubbing in kerosene
and a salve does the trick.”
Phllbeck started pheasant
collecting by buying chicks from
one of several centers around
the country to which birds are
imported and kept under
quarantine for a period of time
as a safety measure. “Since
then I’ve been raising my own.”
He occasionally sells chicks or
eggs to others Interested In
getting into the hobby.
Does he ever eat them?
"Sure, occasionally I’ll have a
cross breed that I wouldn’t want
to sell, so we eat it. Only one
thing wrong—once you eat
pheasant you don’t want to ever
eat any more chicken. They’re
that good.
