PaKr> 8A-KINOS MOUNTAIN HERAUO-Thuraday, December IS, ISTS Charlotte Writers Oub Sets Historical Contest Activity Time In Gastonia The Charlotte Writer's Club announces The Jane Corey Travel Historical Article Contest. The contest Is open to all residents of North Carolina who have published less than three travel articles within the past year. Articles must be typewritten and double spaced, and run between BOO and 2,000 words. Please do not send any photogrraphs. The article must concern a historic place In North Carolina, and travel Information to It. Send three copies of the article to Jane Corey, 2404 Kenmore Ave.; Chailotte, N.C. 28204. Please enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope, and on index card with your name, address, and phone number. Do not put your name on any pages of the manuscript. Articles must be postmarked no later than January 22, 1080. There is no charge for members of the Charlotte Writer’s dub. Non- members, please enclose a check for 18.00 made out to the club. Prices of IBO, 80, and 20 will be awarded, with winners to be announced In Februsury, 1080. This contest was made possible by a generous donation from Ms. Corey. Oastonla Recreation Department will offer an ac tivity period for retarded citizens each Saturday In December at Memorial Hall. Included In these sessions will be disco dance Instruction, arts and crafts, bowling, new games, and other activities of Interest to the participants. A monthly fee of $8 for residents living Inside Osstonla City limits and V tor those living outside Oastonla City limits. No q>eclal equipment Is needed. Disco dance Instruction Is scheduled for the first four activity sessions. Parents and guardfens are asked to bring participants at 12 noon and to return for them at 1 p.m. Stocking Fund Began > b I The Children’s Home Society of North Carolina, Inc., an nounced today the opening of Its little Red Stocking fund-raising campaign. This appeal traditionally Is made during the Thanksgiving and Christmas Seasons. The goal set for this year by the agency’s statewide Board of Directors Is $180,000. Mrs. Sidney J. Stern, Jr., President, made the an nouncement while Issuing the following statement: ”We are happy to know that the private agency retains Its importance In today’s world. Since 1908, ’The Children’s Home Society has served children and their families across our state. We are North CSarollna’s only statewide, private, non- sectaiian adoption a^ncy.” Ihirlng the past year, 188 children found the love and security of permanent adoptive homes through the efforts of The Children’s Homo Society. Clients are served from seven area offices located In Asheville, Charlotte, Chapel HUl, Fayet teville, Orsensboro, OreenvUle and Wilmington. Tlie operating budget of 1110 Children’s Home Society comes from various sources. Ap proximately. 81 percent of the budget Is allocated from North Carolina United Ways. Almost half of the funding ooities from direct contributions, a major portion of which Is derived from gifts made to the little Red Stocking. (• In addition to adoption planning for Infants and older children. The Children’s Home Society offers free, professional problem pregnancy counseling and post adoptive counseling.
