Girls Win, Boys Lose On Friday Kings Mountain High's cagers split their final Southwestern 3- A Conference twinbill of 1979 Friday with Fast Rutherford. The girls came from behind in the fourth period to win 56-47 but the boys lost a 69-61 decision. Both Kings Mountain teams went into the Christmas break with 2-4 conference records. The girls are 3-5 overall and the boys 2-6. They resume action on January 1 at R-S Central. The Mountainettes’ defense shut off East Rutherford’s high- scoring Robin Bailey in the second half to keep the Lady Cavaliers from winning their second straight game. The East team had beaten South Point two nights earlier to break a 27- game losing streak. Bailey, who finished with a game-high 20 points, managed only six points in the second half. “We started overplaying Bailey,” said KM Coach David Brinkley. “We knew she was a good ballplayer and we were conscious of where she was. She only scored from the floor two times in the second half.” The Mountainettes were led by Sheryl Goode and Diane Williams with 17 and 12 points, respectively. "Our. Inside game made a big difference,” said Brinkley. “Sheryl and Diane both played a real good game. They were giving us the low post and we took it.” The Mountainettes had one of their best shooting nights of the year, hitting 24 of 60 attempts for 48 percent. They also out- rebounded a taller East Team, 30 to 14. The Mountaineers stayed within striking distance but trailed most of the game against the tall Cavaliers, who ran their record to 4-2 and stayed in a second place tie with Bums and Shelby. Ronnie Funderburk was the big gun for the Cavaliers, hitting 30 points and a perfect 14-of-l4 from the foul line. Doug Sim mons added 16. East led 20-18 after the first period, 38-33 at intermission and 52-43 going into the fourth quarter. Terrence Blalock and Demetrius Goode led four double-digit scorers for the Mounties with 16 points each. Carl Smith added 15 and Gerald Byers 10.
