The plant will employ as many as 700 people when Killy operational. Another capacitor plant announced last year will start production in September in Greenwood, S.C. In addition, the division has two plants at Greenville, S.C., which employ more than 3,(X)0 people. Another capacitor plant is located in Columbus, Ga. The new plant in Shelby will be Union Carbide’s fifth capacitor plant in the United States. It will contain l(X) square feet. ‘The decision to build a fifth capacitor plant in this country,” said Frank P. Holloway, presi dent of Union Carbide’s Elec tronics Division, ‘is in recogni tion of the constantly increasing demand for ceramic and tan talum capacitors both here and abroad, and reflects Union Car bide’s commitment toward meeting the requirements of our customers.” Union Carbide is the world’s leading supplier of solid tan talum capacitors and is one of the major producers of ceramic capacitors. Courses Set The Continuing Education Department of Cleveltmd Tech has announced the following courses: Microwave cooking begins Monday, July 7, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Burns High School. Kathleen Wilson will instruct the class to be taught at the Old County School Bus Garage. Interior Decorating begins Tuesday, July 8, from 6:30 to 9:30 Pirn., at Tech’s Uptown An nex, room 21. For further information con tact Tech’s Coninuing Educa tion Department at 482-8351. Battery manufeturing plants for Union Carbide’s EVEREADY batteries are located in Asheboro and Green ville, N.C. The Union Carbide Agricultural Products Company announced in April they will build a large technical center at Research Triangle Park, N.C. And in Wilmington, N.C., the company operates a modem air separation plant, a part of the Linde Division, to produce ox ygen, nitrogen and argon. In South Carolina, in addition to the electronics plants. Union Carbide has two major carbon fibers plants. Also, the Carbon Products Division has a carbon brush and seal ring manufactur ing plant in Greenville. In Columbia, the Agricultural Products Company operates the eastern United States regional sales headquarters. A Linde Division air separa tion plant is located in Lugoff, S.C., and a large Linde welding equipment manufacturing plant is located in Florence. Governor James B. Hunt Jr. said, ‘The location of Union Carbide’s electronics related manufacturing plant in Shelby is another indication of the expan ding leadership role North Carolina has in that field. It is also an indication that the elec tronics industry can be spread across the state rather than just concentrated in one area. “We are pleased that Union Carbide would call North Ckuolina home for one of its operations for the ninth time. This is the third major an nouncement by Union Carbide in North Carolina this year. Earlier the company announced a major expansion in Greenville. Also, in April, Union Carbide announced plans to locate its prestigious Agricultural Pro ducts Company technical center at the Research Triangle Park. “Union Carbide is one of this country’s great corporations.
