Sims St., is win ner of the Cleveland County Farm Bureau’s first prize award for the best mini garden project of a Cleveland County 4-H’er. Jack Seism, president of the County Farm Bureau, presented a $25 savings bond to Miss McDaniel, a ninth grader, Mon day afternoon at her home. The mini-garden project was 0 . % sponsored this year by the Cleveland County Agricultural ' Extension Service for 4-H’ers S and youth of 4-H age. Lime, fertilizer, seed, and plants were donated by Rainbow Fdiin Center, Stnith-Douglas Fertilizer, Carolina Farm and Garden, FCX, Elmore feed and Seed, Kings Mountain Farm Center, and Randy’s Produce. A iP 'J ^ total of 80 kits were supplied to interested youngsters. The gardens were judged in late June and prizes provided by the Cleveland County Farm Bureau. Contained in the gardens were english peas, beets, green beans, potatoes, sweet com, tomatoes, and cantaloupes. All of these vegetables were planted in a 10 by 15 foot area. The gardens were judged on a point system based on conformation to the mini-garden plan, weed control and overall appearance, and the gardener’s knowledge of garden ing techniques. After two days of hard judg ing, the judges noticed one thing - the mini-gardens usually look ed better than the larger family gardens! A member of the Dixon 4-H club since April, Linda has loved gardening all her life and started at a young age helping her parents in their backyard vegetable garden. The family is already enjoying com, green beans, cucumbers and tomatoes from Linda’s garden and Mrs. McDaniel plans to freeze vegetables for winter-time eating.
