In other first round games Saturday, North Buncombe edg ed South Buncombe 14-13, East Mecklenburg defeated Belmont 12-1 and Union County edged South Iredell 4-3. In the East Meck-Belmont game. Chip Ferguson and Greg Solomon went 3-for4 each for the winners and Alan Huffman was l-for-3 for Belmont. Solomon hurled the win and Rodney Daniels took the loss. Steve Helms was 3-for-3 to lead Union over Iredell. Mike Freeland was l-for-2 for the losers. Huey Jordan was credited with the win and Mark Medich took the loss. The local nine defeated East Lincoln in their opening round game, but then lost out in two straight to eventual champion Shelby and runner-up Belmont. The KM entry managed only three hits in its final game Friday against Belmont. Roy Mathis was the losing pitcher in the 7-1 defeat. Shelby, which went on to win the event, will represent the district in the State Tournament next week in Asheville. The Kings Mountain all-stars opened tournament play last Wednesday with an impressive 8-1 victory over the East Lincoln all-stars. Righthander Roy Mathis went the distance on the mound, pitching a one-hitter and fanning 14. His teammates backed him with a six-hit attack and flawless defensive play. Mathis had a no-hitter going until one out in the seventh inn ing. He walked only three men. Kenny Mitchem and William Short led the KM plate attack with 2-for-3 each. Mark Dixon added l-for-2 and JeH Moss l-for-3. ★ ★ ★ Shelby put the KM stars in the loser’s bracket in Thursday’s se cond round, 8-5. Kings Mountain outhit the winners, eight to seven, but the defense committed three costly errors. Mark Bolick hurled the win for Shelby and Scott Shaw took the loss. Roy Mathis led the KM hitting with 3-for-4, Kevin Jones was 2-for-3 and David Peeler, Jeff Moss and Mark Dixon had one hit each. Kevin Cole hurled the win and also went 3-for-3 to lead North Buncombe. Chris Beal was 2-for4 for South. Mike Kamisol took the loss. Jack Holbrook was 3-for4 to lead Iredell over Belmont. Chad Nesbit hurled the win and Dwayne Dameron took the loss. Scott Suggs led Belmont at the plate with 1-for-l. Andy Tomberlin was the win ning pitcher in Union County’s win Sunday over East Meek. Tom Malchesky was the loser. Tomberlin was 3-for4 for Union and David Short was 2-for-2 for East Meek. Monday’s schedule, in addi tion to KM-Union County, in cluded North Buncombe against Iredell and South Buncombe against East Meek. The Kings Mountain Little Theatre, In cooperation with the N.C.
