Penner of Route 2 and an eighth grader at Kings Mountain Junior High School, was first runner-up in the Junior Miss Division of the Southeastern Peach Princess Talent Pageant held at Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C. July 12th. Contestants were from North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia and a total of 48 con testants were entered in the pageant. Miss Penner competed with 11 girls in her division. Karen has been taking danc ing lessons from Jane McClure since she was the age of two. She loves tap dancing and enjoys competing in pageants and talent shows. She admits to “sometimes being a little nervous” when per forming on stage. KAREN PENNER She was also the talent winner of the “Our Little Miss” pageant held in Shelby March 8th. Kings Mountain Crime Increases From Page 1 sons reported during an average statewide reporting period of ten months for this new index of fense in 1979. Over 17.5 million dollars worth of property was damaged or destroyed as a result of arson last year. Edmisten stated, “Approx imately 2 murders, 3 rapes, 12 robberies, 51 aggravated assaults, 196 burglaries, 363 larcenies and 34 motor vehicle thefts occurred on the average day in North Carolina last year. Only 25.7 percent of all crimes were cleared by arrests or other means in 1979. The clearance rate for index offenses has now dropped for the fourth con secutive year. Although nearly 70 percent of the violent of fenses were cleared, 80 percent of the property crimes remained unsolved.” I^strict 10 Toumey Set The 1980 District 10 Men’s Class C Tournament is being held at City Stadium on Friday, August 1 and Saturday, August 2. Inc. 864-8769 Index crime alone accounted for almost 100 million dollars worth of property stolen in 1979. Of this 100 million, only 35 million was recovered resulting in a net loss to the peo ple of North Carolina of almost 65 million dollars. Couple this with the losses suffered in pro perty either stolen, damaged or destroyed as a result of cases in volving fraud, arson, vandalism, embezzlement, etc. and it is possible that the total cost of crime in North Carolina now ex ceeds a quarter of a billion dollars a year. Five North Carolina law en forcement officers were killed in the line of duty last year bringing the total number of officers kill-, ed in this state during the I970’s to 40. Recent FBI figures show 106 officers killed in the United States in 1979, with 49 of these deaths occurring in the southern states.
