) • •; • A I • Thursaoy. luly 31. 1980-KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Pag* 5A Babe Ruth Stars Third In State 3 • Kings Mountain’s Senior Babe Ruth all-stars finished third in the eight-team State Tourna ment this week at South Iredell High School near Statesville. The local nine posted a 3-2 record and lost out in the semi finals Tuesday night to East Asheville 6-2. Earlier in the tourney, the KM team defeated West Asheville 5-1, lost to Charlotte 9-5 and defeated North Foothills 6-2 and South Foothills 5-0. East Asheville was scheduled to face Charlotte last night for the State title and a trip to the Southeastern Regionals in Alabama. Kings Mountain third baseman Alan Van Dyke was one of the tournament’s leading hitters, getting seven hits in 12 trips to the plate. He went 2-for-3 in the win over East Asheville, had three hits in the win over South Foothills and two hits in the final game loss to East Asheville. Kings Mountain’s Ricky Proc tor hurled the opening round win over West Asheville and earned a save in the third round Joe’s Takes District victory over North Foothills. Johnny Greene of Crest picked up the win in that game and Crest’s Vince Kale led the hitting with 2-for-3, including a homer. In Tuesday’s 5-0 win over South Foothills, Tim Wiliams of Burns hurled a two-hitter to pick up the victory. Coach Bill Cameron of Crest, coaching Babe Ruth ball for the first time, said he was ‘T’leased with the team’s performance and with the tournament. It was a tough field and our men per formed well. Joe’s Body Shop captured the District 10 NCASA champion ship this past weekend by defeating Western Steer of Shelby by scores of 4-2 and 144 at City Stadium. The tourney was comprised of three top notch teams from Cleveland County. Western Steer earned the right to the championship game by beating Wilson’s 6-0 and 14-2. Leading hitters for Joe’s were Barbara Shuford and Peggy Led ford, both hitting for a .571 average. Joe’s will advance to the State Tournament, to be held in Statesville, N.C., August 29 thru September 1. This time the competition will kick off at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, August 6, A in the second Annual Yo-Yo ^ Olympics. This year’s competi tion, the first for this area, will be held in the Games Room of the Kings Mountain Neighborhood Facility Center (Community Center) located at 208 North Cleveland Avenue. Y oungsters through the age of 15 are still eligible to register, so that they can participate. There will be two age categories - 11 and under and 12 through 15. Boys and girls will be called upon to perform 10 tricks at the local level, including such favorites as Gravity Pull, Sleeper, Walk the Dog, Forward Pass, and Around the World, but can qualify for state and regional finals with a minimum number of points, along with the winners in each division. A $1,0(X).00 U.S. Savings Bond will be awarded to the Gold Medalist, with $500.00 and $250.00 in scholarship bonds to the Silver and Bronze Medalists, respectively. Each Regional winner earns a $100.00 bond, awarded at the National Finals. It is expected that in excess of one million youngsters will com pete in this year’s event, in over 1,000 cities and countries. The 1980 Super Sugar Crisp Yo-YOlympics is a cooperative public service effort jointly spon sored by Community Parks and Recreation Departments and the Duncan Toys Company on behalf of U.S. youth. The spon sor for this area competition is the Kings Mountain Parks and Recreation Department. Participation in the competi tion is entirely free and all eligi ble area youngsters are invited to participate.
